Going back to basics. Do I really need another picture of an ape? NFT market slumps in August

Going back to basics. Do I really need another picture of an ape? NFT market slumps in August

The article did reflect some of my views but also did not. The core message that I was trying to say is that the NFT market is at the rebuilding stage right now. The previous highs that were in the bull market are in a challenging stage. The prices were unsustainable, and it will continue this way as the macro environment is not looking too optimistic now.

There are many contributing factors to this current state but is this the end of the NFT markets? It is not.

Right now there are more projects in the markets working hard behind the scene working on content, books, music, and better gaming assets and experiences. The speculation market has died down, and this is actually very healthy for all of us to grow.

This is a time to go back to basics. We can look at the 5Ps of marketing- Product, Price, Promotion, Place, and People.

When we are in the bull market, whatever products can sell without doing anything. But in the current times, we need to look at the product. Is it value for money?

Pricing is another factor to look at. PFP in the good times can start at a 1 ETH floor price. We should watch our pricing more carefully right now. Take my NFT book, for example, I choose to launch it on Bybit NFT Marketplace at $2.99, not $29.99. This decision was made after looking at the market and the demand from my communities.

Lastly, I think people and community are what we should be building too. If you do not have this, this is the best time to look into it now. This will also help you to get better results when the market turns better.

Do I really need another picture of an ape? NFT market slumps in August

The NFT hype from earlier in the year is dying off as the market continues its downward path into the final third of the year. Fire sale coming for apes and cats?

The number of unique non-fungible token (NFT) buyers in August fell below 500,000 for the first time in a year and extended the drop in purchasers to four consecutive months, according to NFT aggregation site CryptoSlam.

Due to an increase in Ethereum prices in early August, total sales rose to US$730 million from July’s US$650 million, but remain a long way short of this year’s January peak of US$4.5 billion.

Yehudah Petscher, NFT relations strategist for CryptoSlam, said the NFT market has caught up with the rest of the world, as traditional markets have been hammered by concerns about rising inflation and interest rates, as well as other global developments.

“People are being much more selective with what they buy and questioning, ‘Do I really want to buy this picture of an ape or a cat for $500?’” Petscher told Forkast in an interview. “You used to give no pause before and you would buy that and you were happy to. And now no, now you need a product. You need something more than just the picture.”

The previous high prices in the NFT market were unsustainable, said Anndy Lian, author of the new book “NFT: From Zero to Hero,” in an email response to questions. The “[NFT] environment is not looking too optimistic,” he said, though added that price retrenchments are also when companies build anew.

The Merge

One event on the horizon could further disrupt the NFT market — Ethereum’s Merge planned for later in September.

The Merge will see the world’s second-largest blockchain, which has a market cap of just under US$200 billion and accounted for almost 70% of all NFT transactions in August, move from a proof-of-work (PoW) consensus algorithm to proof-of-stake (PoS).

The buzz around the Merge, saw Ethereum prices almost double in a month to reach as high as US$2,022 in mid-August. Ethereum Classic, the original blockchain from which Ethereum was forked, also more than doubled in the same period to a five-month high of US$45.51.

Both have since fallen back, with Ethereum trading at US$1,587 on Friday in Asia and Ethereum Classic at US$32.67.

Petscher said the Merge might “introduce a little chaos” to the market.

As part of the Merge, all NFTs currently hosted on the PoW blockchain must be replicated on the new PoS network to become the “official” versions of the NFTs.

OpenSea, by far the industry’s largest marketplace, announced Thursday that they will only be supporting the PoS versions of NFT collections, but that doesn’t mean a market for the PoW versions won’t emerge, Petscher said.

Deja vu?

This situation is not without precedent. A debate emerged earlier this year surrounding the authenticity of CryptoPunks – one of the market’s leading collections with over US$2 billion in sales – as the current collections are actually re-issues designed to fix a bug in the original run, now known as V1 CryptoPunks.

While the CryptoPunks creators, Lava Labs, originally sought to discredit the V1 collection, collectors pushed back and now V1 CryptoPunks are traded in their own right as a piece of NFT history — though with much smaller total sales of US$75 million.

Aside from the Merge, Petscher said it will take a significant catalyst from outside the NFT industry to shake off the current market slump. One example could be Apple Inc. releasing its long-awaited virtual reality (VR) headset, which Petscher says has huge potential for NFT integration.

“It’s going to require something big like that,” he said. “Unless, of course, the world changes; if  suddenly the war ends and the traditional stock market starts improving, that would lead to the good times again.”

“But I don’t think anybody sees that on the horizon right now.”

3 cryptocurrencies you should invest in this August to cash in on the market rebound

3 cryptocurrencies you should invest in this August to cash in on the market rebound

Bitcoin and the cryptocurrency market bounced back strongly in July after a severe correction during the second quarter. Bitcoin increased in value by 17%, its highest monthly performance since October 2021, according to a CryptoRank Platform tweet on August 1.

The July climb indicates that the market is starting the new month on a positive footing after maintaining its crucial levels to sit above the important $1 trillion market cap in the opening few days.

In light of that, investors are coming back to the market as the path of recovery continues. Below are three coins to invest in, in August, in order to cash in on the rebound.

1. Ethereum

Ether, the second largest cryptocurrency based on market capitalisation has enjoyed a rally recently, thanks to the announcement of its upcoming ‘Merge’.

And now, the community is starting August on a positive note as plans are now in place for the Goerli Merge to occur on Aug 11, the final testnet merge prior to transitioning to a proof-of-stake (PoS) blockchain.

The Merge is expected to push Ether to new heights

The Merge is a massive step for Ethereum and the community and that is the reason to bet on it in August. It keeps showing great strength of bullish movement as the anticipated merge gets closer.

Ethereum is currently trading at $1,730 but a break of this region would send Ethereum’s price to $2,400 and even higher if the bulls and sentiments of the market stay strong ahead of the Merge.

It should definitely be on the list of your coins to invest in August.

2. Kava

Kava is an extremely fast layer one blockchain that combines the Ethereum and Cosmos ecosystem into a single, scalable network. The ecosystem has seen groundbreaking developments which bode a positive movement for its native token.

On August 31, Kava 11 is set to launch and it is expected to greatly increase the total value locked in the platform. The main features of the upgrade will include: KAVA liquid staking, KAVA earns – a yield aggregator, MetaMask support for all KAVA transactions and Protocol owned liquidity.

Kava 11 is set to launch on August 31

The sentiment in the KAVA community has been positive and there seems to be an air of excitement which means it should be on your list of coins to invest in.

BigONE Exchange’s chair Anndy Lian explained to Capital.com that Kava’s function to lend and borrow assets using a number of cryptocurrencies as collateral still serves as a big plus for the platform.

“The slide in the price recently is due to the overall market conditions. Some investors may see steeper plunges due to the performances of their collateralised assets. In my humble opinion, there is nothing to be worried about at this point, their codes are sound and their treasury is still holding up well.”

In the build-up to the upgrade scheduled for late in August, the native token is expected to trade around $5, over 100% of its current market price of $2.18.

Consider having it in your list of coins to invest in.

3. Monero

Monero is a secure and confidential blockchain that focuses on providing complete privacy for its users with $XMR as its native token.

The network will undergo a network upgrade on Aug 13 which will introduce various new features, such as an upgrade in Bulletproofs algorithm and a ring-size increase from 11 to 16.

One key reason $XMR is one of the coins with potential in August 2022 is its rapid growth rate. This will eventually boost the adoption of the Monero network, pushing the price of $XMR to new highs.

The token has enjoyed a decent rally in the last 30 days by moving from around $117 to its current price of $166. If it breaks out from that region which is very likely due to the hype surrounding its new features, the price would be expected to increase towards the $200 mark.

Monero($XMR) should be on your list of coins to invest in!

NFT sales limp into August with a 25% drop from June to July amid crypto slump

NFT sales limp into August with a 25% drop from June to July amid crypto slump

Market analysts are mixed on outlook for non-fungible tokens, as some see mostly gloom, others point to glimmers of optimism.

Non-fungible token (NFT) sales in July on secondary markets fell 25% from June to US$650 million, the second month in a row under US$1 billion, according to data from NFT aggregation site CryptoSlam, and reflecting a broader crypto slump.

Sales had peaked in January at US$4.7 billion, with more than 1 million unique buyers in the market.

“The current [crypto] market right now is in a bear market,” Anndy Lian, blockchain author and entrepreneur and founding member of NFT creator studio Influxo, told Forkast in an interview. “So [NFT] sales actually reflect very much on how the market is reacting.”

Yehudah Petscher, NFT relations strategist for CryptoSlam, said he thinks the market has yet to find the bottom.

However, he did find some optimism in the number of unique buyers in the market, pointing out buyers fell just 7% month-on-month in July to 532,000, which remains higher than in the same month last year.

This shows, Petscher says, that while total sales in U.S. dollars are down, the number of transactions make for a slightly more optimistic outlook.

“NFTs are in rough place right now, but I still think in a very healthy place as far as growth [or] as far as transactions [are concerned],” Petscher said.

The so-called “Merge” for Ethereum could also give the NFT market a shot in the arm, as the leading blockchain for NFTs is slated to move to a proof-of-stake (PoS) network in coming months.

The move to PoS will reportedly reduce the energy used in the Ethereum network by up to 99%, blunting environmental criticism of how the network operates.

“I think [the Merge] will create another spur of hype among the Ethereum fan base,” Lian said, but warning that transaction fees — another common criticism of the Ethereum network — will likely remain high.

NFT and crypto markets now seem to be largely correlated, despite expectations during the NFT boom of late 2021 and early 2022 that they would be inversely correlated. The view then was investors would be less willing to buy NFTs when the crypto they were denominated in was gaining in U.S. dollar terms.

Rather than falling crypto values driving the price of NFTs up to compensate, the overall negativity in the market is driving prices lower to attract what buyers are there, Petscher said.

“There’s not a lot of liquidity and people are worried that there’s not going to be buyers when they’re looking to sell, so it is a race to the bottom,” Petscher said. “We can see that with prices across the board.”

Apes (still) rule

Projects from Yuga Labs continued to dominate the top of the bestseller list in July, with Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC) and CryptoPunks all in the top five.

This made the project the seventh to reach the US$1 billion in total sales mark, despite it only launching in May.

With over US$30 million in secondary sales in July, soccer-based collection Sorare came in third on CryptoSlam’s list. Sorare allows people to buy and sell players as part of a global fantasy football competition as another way to interact with the world’s game.

Petscher told Forkast that he expects sports to be a real growth area, as these tokens typically bring with them increased utility.

Another growth area is art, Petscher says, who sees attention beginning to move away from NFTs as simply profile pictures to more fully fledged pieces of art as more creators move into the space.

“It’s just the tip of the iceberg,” Petscher said. “Art [NFTs] are just starting, it’s here in a big way and it will just keep growing.”
