Dogecoin holders celebrate ‘Dogeday’ 4/20 as ETF decision draws near

Dogecoin holders worldwide celebrate “Dogeday” on April 20, as the memecoin’s community awaits upcoming deadlines for Dogecoin-related exchange-traded fund (ETF) applications.

Dogeday marks the unofficial holiday of the Dogecoin community. It gained traction in the memecoin community four years ago, in 2021, during International Weed Day on April 20.

Despite its reputation as a joke token, Dogecoin remains the eighth-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, currently valued at $23.3 billion, according to CoinMarketCap.

Dogecoin’s tokenomics have often been criticized for issuing 14.4 million worth of new DOGE into circulation per day, giving it a daily inflation rate of over $2.16 million.

Dogecoin’s staying power “stems from a blend of community-driven enthusiasm, low entry barriers, and speculative appeal,” according to Anndy Lian, author and intergovernmental blockchain expert.

Dogecoin’s inflationary tokenomics may also contribute to its retail appeal, Lian told Cointelegraph, adding:

“Unlike Bitcoin or Ethereum, Dogecoin’s inflationary supply — adding roughly 5 billion coins annually — keeps prices accessible, typically under $1, making it psychologically appealing for retail investors.”

“The retail appeal is amplified by Dogecoin’s meme-driven branding, which resonates with younger, internet-savvy investors,” explained Lian.

Memecoins like Dogecoin lack underlying blockchain use cases and typically rally based on social media traction and retail hype alone.

In November 2024, Dogecoin surpassed Porsche’s market capitalization, driven by continued social media endorsements by billionaire Elon Musk.

Dogecoin community awaits DOGE ETFs deadline in May

The Dogecoin community is closely watching the US Securities and Exchange Commission as it weighs several DOGE-related ETF applications.

There are four Dogecoin ETF filings awaiting approval: the Bitwise Dogecoin ETF, the Grayscale Dogecoin ETF, the 21Shares Dogecoin ETF and the Osprey Fund Dogecoin ETF.

Grayscale’s ETF application is due for a response on May 21 after the SEC delayed its decision on multiple crypto ETF filings.

Bitwise’s filing could receive a response on May 18, which marks the end of the SEC’s 75-day initial review period after the 19b-4 filing. However, the 240-day review period could enable the regulator to delay the decision until October 2024 for both filings.

The ETF applications from 21Shares and Osprey are still pending review for their initial 19b-4 filings, with no set deadline from the securities regulator.

Market wrap: US equities muted amid tariff news, gold hits near record high, digital assets is the future

Market wrap: US equities muted amid tariff news, gold hits near record high, digital assets is the future

The economic landscape of the past week has been shaped by a complex interplay of policy announcements, market reactions, and strategic corporate moves, all set against a backdrop of global uncertainty. At the forefront of these developments was President Trump’s indication of imposing tariffs on automobile, semiconductor, and pharmaceutical imports, potentially starting from April 2nd. This move, ostensibly aimed at encouraging foreign manufacturers to invest in US production facilities, could have profound implications, particularly for industries where international supply chains are deeply integrated.

The automobile sector, already navigating through the challenges of electrification and autonomous driving, now faces the added complexity of potential tariff hikes. For European carmakers like Volkswagen and BMW, and Asian giants like Toyota and Hyundai, the implications are stark. The tariffs could increase the cost of vehicles for US consumers, potentially dampening demand, or push these companies towards establishing or expanding manufacturing operations in the US This shift, while beneficial for local job creation, comes with its own set of challenges, including high setup costs, cultural integration, and the need for skilled labor. Moreover, the environmental impact of such a move could be significant, considering the carbon footprint associated with new production setups.

Despite these looming threats, US equity markets showed a tempered response. The MSCI US index managed a slight increase of 0.3 per cent, with gains predominantly in Energy and Materials sectors, suggesting perhaps an anticipation of benefits from increased domestic production or from sectors less directly impacted by the tariffs. However, this muted market reaction might also indicate a ‘wait-and-see’ approach from investors, expecting either negotiations or modifications to the tariff policy before its full implementation.

The Federal Reserve’s stance, as articulated by various officials, was to maintain current interest rates, reflecting a cautious approach to monetary policy amidst these trade uncertainties. Yet, the market’s expectation for a rate cut by September, as priced into futures, shows an underlying belief that the Fed might eventually need to counteract any adverse economic effects of these tariffs, like inflation or a slowdown in consumer spending. This is mirrored by a rise in the 10-year US Treasury yield to 4.55 per cent, suggesting a market adjusting to new realities of potentially higher inflation or a stronger dollar, which indeed rose by 0.5 per cent to above 107.

Gold’s steady hold near record highs, with a 1.4 per cent increase, underscores the market’s search for safety amid these geopolitical and trade tensions. Meanwhile, Brent crude oil’s recovery after OPEC+’s suggestion to delay supply increases could signal a tighter oil market, which might benefit energy companies but also stir inflation concerns.

In Asia, the economic narrative was somewhat divergent. The Reserve Bank of Australia’s rate cut to 4.10 per cent was a move to stimulate an economy facing external pressures, yet it came with warnings against expecting too much from further monetary easing. In China, the decline in the CSI300 index by 0.9 per cent reflected ongoing concerns about economic stability and the impact of US trade policies. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index’s initial gains fizzled out, pointing to a cautious optimism regarding government support for the private sector.

Turning to the digital economy, significant movements are afoot in the cryptocurrency space. Robinhood Markets’ planned expansion into Singapore through Bitstamp, an exchange it acquired for US$200 million, highlights a strategic push into Asia’s burgeoning crypto market. This move not only aims at leveraging Bitstamp’s regulatory and institutional strengths but also reflects a broader trend of integrating cryptocurrencies into mainstream finance, albeit with careful consideration of regulatory landscapes.

Hong Kong’s proactive stance on digital assets was vividly illustrated at the Coindesk Consensus Hong Kong 2025 conference, where the CEO of the Securities and Futures Commission, Julia Leung, outlined plans for new crypto products like derivatives and margin lending. This aligns with Hong Kong’s ambition to become a leading center for digital assets, especially post the 2021 crypto ban in mainland China. The issuance of nine digital asset trading licenses, with more applications in review, and the drafting of stablecoin regulations, all point towards a strategic pivot to capitalise on the global crypto boom.

From my perspective, these developments are indicative of a world where traditional economic structures are being challenged by new policies and technological advancements. The potential tariffs could lead to a reconfiguration of global supply chains, impacting not just trade but also environmental and employment policies. The Fed’s cautious approach to interest rates reflects a delicate balancing act between supporting growth and controlling inflation. Meanwhile, the rise of digital assets in regulated markets like Hong Kong and Singapore signifies a shift towards a more tech-driven financial ecosystem, where regulation will play a crucial role in shaping market dynamics.

This economic juncture requires companies and investors to be agile, adapting not just to policy changes but also to technological innovations. The interplay between these economic, regulatory, and technological shifts will continue to define the strategies and fortunes of businesses worldwide, making this a critical time for strategic foresight and adaptability.

$NEAR Protocol Keeps Growing in TVL — and Adds 18M Users

$NEAR Protocol Keeps Growing in TVL — and Adds 18M Users

NEAR Protocol continues to thrive in the cryptocurrency industry, with growing usage and the price surge of its native token (NEAR) over the last year.

Over the past week NEAR gained headlines amid the launch of Chain Signatures that allow NEAR accounts and smart contracts to send transactions to any blockchain — enhancing accessibility across multiple chains.

According to a Flipside report sent to Techopedia, NEAR Protocol experienced impressive growth in total value locked (TVL) and monthly transactions — 18m new users since the start of 2024.

A Flipside report shared with Techopedia revealed that Near Protocol’s ecosystem has been experiencing an array of successes since the start of 2024.

The protocol’s TVL has nearly tripled since the start of 2024, surging from $90.7 million to $324.6 million between January and early June, reaching an annual high of $366.1 million in mid-May.

Even though the protocol’s overall TVL levels have slightly dropped since May, they remain around three times higher than they were at the start of 2024.

Additionally, NEAR’s transaction volume has also witnessed uninterrupted, upward growth throughout the first six months of 2024 with the token’s month-over-month (MoM) transaction volume surging from 88.2 million transactions to 231.8 million between January and May.

NEAR Closing the Gap with BSC in New User Accumulation

The successes in the protocol’s TVL and MoM volumes were accompanied by an “explosive” new user growth, seeing how NEAR had managed to attract the second-most new users of any recorded chain in the first quarter of 2024, being surpassed by Binance Smart Chain (BSC), which has historically been dominating charts for several years now.

In the first quarter of 2024, NEAR saw 18 million new users and continued the positive momentum into the second quarter of 2024, standing behind BSC and Solana.

Flipside highlighted:

“In response to this massive user influx, the NEAR team added two more shards to the chain (for a total of 6 shards) in May 2024, increasing NEAR’s network capacity by ~50%. This upgrade was implemented live without any network downtime or disruption to user transactions, and additional shards can be added in perpetuity to meet the chain’s future growth.”

NEAR Protocol’s February launch of HERE Wallet’s Telegram integration, which lets users create Web3 accounts using their Telegram credentials, execute token transfers, and mine HOT tokens, has further accelerated the protocol’s successes. This helped it win the race in quarterly new wallet growth, surpassing BSC in the second quarter of 2024.

However, NEAR’s on-chain activity seems to be mostly driven by existing users rather than new wallets. New users made 55.4% of all transactions in February 2024 but only 7.4% in June.

Bridging Inflows Continue to Surpass Outflows

The volume of assets bridged onto NEAR exceeded bridging outflows for five out of the six months so far in 2024, with bridged inflow volume growing by 2.2 times between January and May and outflow volume falling by 12.8% during the same time.

In addition, the USD-dominated value of assets bridged to or from NEAR increased by 67.5% between January and May 2024, with four out of five NEAR’s top-bridged tokens being USD stablecoins.

The report highlighted that in terms of volume, USDC was the top-bridged token on NEAR followed by three other USD-based stablecoins and STNEAR (staked NEAR).

“The fact that STNEAR is the only non-stablecoin in the top 5 (ranked #3) reflects the growing trust and reliance on NEAR’s growing range of stablecoin-based activities, which are fundamental to the chain’s expanding DeFi landscape.”

With stablecoins having a wide array of uses in decentralized finance protocols for activities such as yield farmingliquidity provision, and lending/borrowing, the heightened preference for stablecoins on NEAR could suggest that users are starting to leverage NEAR’s DeFi ecosystem to generate returns without having to expose themselves to the volatility that other cryptocurrencies are usually prone to.

NEAR Protocols Success Attributed to AI Integration

Speaking with Techopedia, Anndy Lian, an inter-governmental blockchain adviser, noted that NEAR’s latest add-on, the launch of Chain Signatures, may have been one of the reasons may also be attributed to NEAR’s focus on artificial intelligence (AI).

Flipside noticed that there had been a significant focus on AI-powered applications through the formation of the NEAR.AI R&D Lab and the NEAR Foundation’s recent 1 million NEAR token delegation to NEAT, a roll-up protocol designed for scaling AI applications on NEAR.

Lian highlighted that the fusion of AI and blockchain technologies holds promise for innovation, efficiency, and new economic models.

“AI can improve consensus algorithms, detect anomalies, and enhance security across blockchain networks. Privacy-focused AI techniques, such as zero-knowledge proofs, can protect user data while maintaining transparency. AI-powered smart contracts can dynamically adapt based on real-world events or data.”

He added that, given NEAR’s recent surge, which was powered by AI, exploring AI use cases could be a strategic move to further enhance the protocol in the future.

The Bottom Line

NEAR Protocol is heading through 2024 with a wave of energy behind it.

The protocol’s TVL and monthly transaction volumes have seen impressive increases, and the integration of AI through the NEAR.AI R&D Lab and initiatives like Chain Signatures and HERE Wallet’s Telegram integration are helping further.
