Cryptocurrency Bill: Experts say DeFi cannot be shut down by governments

Even as the Centre is set to go ahead with its plan to ban most cryptocurrencies in the country under a long-awaited bill, experts say decentralized entities cannot be shut down by governments and that mulling such a move will not only hurt individuals but also larger businesses.

On Tuesday, a parliamentary bulletin listing upcoming legislation included one paragraph on “The Cryptocurrency and Regulation of Official Digital Currency Bill, 2021”.

“To create a facilitative framework for the creation of the official digital currency to be issued by the Reserve Bank of India,” it read. “The Bill also seeks to prohibit all private cryptocurrencies in India, however, it allows for certain exceptions to promote the underlying technology of cryptocurrency and its uses.”

Hayden Hughes, CEO of Alpha Impact, a social trading platform, said like other Central banks across the world, the RBI is “fearful” of losing control over monetary policy and seeks to rapidly push a Central Bank Digital Currency while slowing down mainstream cryptocurrencies.

“Even if there is a total ban on cryptocurrencies in India, we only have to look to China to see that firms would immediately offshore their operations. Only onshore crypto companies would be affected. Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies are, after all, decentralized, meaning they cannot be shut down. If China cannot shut crypto down, India won’t be able to either,” Hughes said.

Anndy Lian, Chairman, BigONE Exchange said what is needed is better regulation and education to support the estimated 15-20 million crypto investors in India, who are benefiting from using cryptocurrency to send and receive money around the world, through to earning money from playing blockchain-based games such as Axie Infinity.

“With India’s crypto adoption ranking second in the world in the recent 2021 Global Crypto Adoption Index from Chainalysis, this move looks like it will not only hurt individuals but also larger businesses. Compared to Vietnam and Pakistan the country has a significantly larger share of large institutional investors, suggesting that India’s cryptocurrency investors are part of larger, more sophisticated organizations,” he said.

He added that to ban cryptocurrency as part of a wider strategy to roll out its own central bank digital currency (CBDC) will seriously undermine the nation’s crypto and blockchain business community, with the crypto industry in India currently seeing over 100 percent growth month-on-month growth, despite the government’s alleged desire to foster innovation in the blockchain sector.

Raj Kapoor, Founder – India Blockchain Alliance and Chief Growth Officer at Chainsense LTD said the government should bring about awareness instead of banning arbitrarily and let people decide and that a forward-looking economy needs forward-thinking Governments. “Cover the bases, yes, but let us not erode them. We are world tech leaders and we should show the path to the world in the crypto policy. This is our chance – will we grab it or we see a fund flight out of our shores soon,” he said.

International Experts Talks about the Future of Blockchain at World Blockchain Summit Busan 2020

International Experts Talks about the Future of Blockchain at World Blockchain Summit Busan 2020

The World Blockchain Summit Busan 2020 brought international technology experts to Busan, South Korea, to discuss the future of blockchain. Anndy Lian, inter-governmental Blockchain Advisor and author of Blockchain Revolution 2020 and Andrew Faridani, President & CEO Breeze Max Web and Forbes Business Development Council were at a panel titled “The Future cannot be regulated”.

“Innovation is the guarantor of future prosperity and not regulation. In order for us to have a brighter future, we need to be innovative now to set a good foundation, and regulations can set in later to standardize. This is how typically sandbox models work, we trial and error, and if the results are good and acceptable, they graduate from the sandbox regime. Singapore’s MAS did a good job for blockchain-driven project, and I believe Busan as the regulatory free zone can take reference from what was done and make it better.” Anndy commented.

Andrew agreed with the points and added: “The companies best positioned to be able to help the authorities make responsible regulations are those companies in industries that have the power to generate the most customers. The leading industry may be the gaming industry, because of its potential to recruit end-users at a rapid rate is probably the biggest out of any of the industries involved right now in blockchain. Responsible leading companies such as Gaimin, have the ability to be the forerunners of this movement.”

Former South Korea Minister of Environment Lee Maanee and keynote speaker at the event also explained further, “Busan has designated the blockchain special zone and laid the foundation for the public and private sectors to become the leading model of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.”

Park Bong-Kyu, chairman of World Blockchain Summit Busan said, “Two years ago, blockchain was an unfamiliar field, but I thought it will be a new wave that would make a big difference in our everyday life. I learned about blockchain and expanded the community with all my passion. I will continue to educate everyone with blockchain knowledge.”

Blockchain experts from Maker DAO, Conflux, Gaimin.io, Quarkchain were present at the event to lend their support and find out more about the Busan Economic Zone.

The World Blockchain Summit Busan 2020 was held in Busan on 20th February 2020, jointly organised by Blockchain MARVELS and Busan Economic Promotion Agency, and hosted by the Korea CEO Summit, Busan, BNK Financial Group, Korea Blockchain Industry Promotion Association, Korea Blockchain Startup Association, Korea Blockchain Association, Global Fintech Industry Promotion Center, Chungbuk Blockchain and Korea e-Sports Industry Association.

Affiliate Marketing in the Age of Blockchain: Experts Share their Views in Philippines

Affiliate Marketing in the Age of Blockchain: Experts Share their Views in Philippines

Blockchain Experts from China, Philippines and Singapore were lined up at Affiliate Conference & Expo (ACE) to share how the new technology can help affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing meets blockchain at the first ever Affiliate Conference & Expo in Manila from 21 to 22 November 2019 at the Solaire Resort & Casino.

Trust and transparency are the some of the key missing components in affiliate marketing and coincidentally these problems can be addressed with the adoption of blockchain technology.

Anndy Lian from Singapore, book Author of Blockchain Revolution 2030 and an inter-governmental blockchain advisor gave an individual presentation on what are the vital elements needed for an affiliate marketing scheme to work well in today’s society and how blockchain helps to close up the gap. During the presentation, he described his preferred scenarios for blockchain usage for affiliate marketing. He used an incentive token model for advertising that he trialed with BreezeMaxWeb to illustrate how tokens can draw users to click and get profit by verifying the advertisements on the chain. Then using a gamification model by Gaimin to create stickiness. Last but not least using pr companies like Blockcast.cc to push out verified news within an incentivized network to encourage users to participate in the online and offline activities and promotions within the community.

“The above that I have described is something that we have trialed. The current affiliate marketing programs have a bad name and it will remain that way if we don’t bother to change it. They advertise unethically, many small disclaimers and at times the brand owners of the products are no where to be found. By introducing blockchain to their existing model, it gives users more control over the information they are exposed to, the rewards they worked hard for will also be transparent and this gives ease to the users.” Shared Anndy.

A panel comprised of Jenny Zheng- Cofounder of Blockcast.cc, Jake Villanueva- Investment Manager of Y Investments Philippines Inc, Myrtle Anne- Founder of Blockchain Tides and Anndy Lian were assembled. The panel gave candid views during the panel discussion and that started a series of questions & answers from audiences as they want to find out more.

Jake commented that there are a lot of catching up within the Philippines community on blockchain and crypto currencies. “The communities who believe in blockchain have increased a lot. I can feel the excitement and the enthusiasm. But bear in mind, we are not totally ready yet to embrace this technology. There are needs to invest into infrastructures and educated the general public what is blockchain.”

“I agree with Jake totally. Education is very important and that is why we started Blockcast.cc. This is a platform where we share. Bitcoin, speculations and blockchain technologies have to be carefully distinguished. Coming back to the point on the market not being ready, I think the Philippines market has a great advantage over the rest of ASEAN. Just like China, we skipped the era of credit cards and jumped into a new digital economy with the Alipay and WeChatPay. I strongly believe that blockchain payment can do well in this lovely country!” Jenny added.

Myrtle who is the moderator for the panel, concurred with Jenny’s observations too. “Philippines community for blockchain will grow very strong. I have seen cafes that are trying to use bitcoin as a mode of payment. This is a good move and I think they are ahead of the curve. I have also consulted a project in Philippines who is cleverly using the blockchain technology for their health business. Again, this is very heart warming and my efforts to push this technology forward are gaining adoption.”

“As you know, I do give advice to governments and businesses on blockchain. Philippines government will step up to regulate this industry and we will see more updates in 2020. You will see more trading and securities tokens (STO) regulations soon. This will give users, investors and companies more confidence. It will draw in many new adoption into this industry and I am sure Philippines will stand out from this region when the regulations are in place.” Anndy explained further.

ACE 2019 is the go-to Affiliate Marketing event in Asia for the world’s top Affiliates, Digital Marketers, Merchants and eCommerce entrepreneurs gathered under one roof.
