Despite billion-dollar investment, why GameFi is failing to woo Asians?

Market experts argue that GameFi is not gambling. It refers to the financialisation of video gaming and could transform gaming business models and power the digital economy, they say.

New Delhi: Crypto industry is betting big on the GameFi industry with billions of dollars invested, but in the Asian market, the segment is likely to face a stiff and severe challenge, thanks to strict and rigid regulations in multiple countries.

The existing laws and regulations are quite hostile for GameFi. Countries like South Korea and China have had laws about converting in-game tokens into fiat currency for nearly 15 years.

In South Korea, gaming is a serious industry and has its own regulatory code – strictly prohibiting speculative acts, gambling and free gifts. Its laws prohibit converting game tokens into cash.

Market experts argue that GameFi is not gambling. It refers to the financialisation of video gaming and could transform gaming business models and power the digital economy, they say.

Obasi Francis, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer, DeSpace said that GameFi can be defined as the combination of video games (gaming) and decentralised finance (DeFi).

The People’s Bank of China has put a blanket ban on crypto trading, whereas Japan is convinced enough to consider it as gambling. In India, the Supreme Court has questioned the government to clear its stance on the legitimacy of cryptos.

Anndy Lian, Chairman, BigONE Exchange said that GameFi is not Defi. Playing hard to earn in the game and then allow it to turn into coupons so that you can buy some food is not gambling.

“There are games that are tokenised but not listed on any exchanges and only able to redeem very specific things and not cash directly,” he added. “They are only doing it in their own ecosystem.”

Crypto gaming has grown in popularity as it allows players to collect and trade virtual assets that can be exchanged and traded anywhere in the world. It has emerged as a way to earn money from the gaming industry in a safe and secure manner.

However, GameFi is more about the yield, than the game. Games like Axie Infinity, whose native token has delivered multibagger returns, do not have many daily active users, and most of its user base comes from developing countries.

Currently, the blockchain games have more talkers than players. These games lack an active gamer base as users want to reap the yield and not play the game. Also, the in-game economy suffers from crippling inflation.

Unlike conventional games, blockchain games enable users to make money by buying, selling and exchanging non-fungible tokens (NFTs) for various in-game items, said Francis.

On the other hand, Lian agrees that GameFi is not more developed in low per capita countries. “Game content and quality comes first and not the earnings,” he added.

Undoubtedly, GameFi is one of the hottest technologies in the crypto eco-space, and early investors can expect gaming-related collectibles to power the virtual economy.

But the games can’t go mainstream in Asia’s major markets because authorities would crack down using laws. Also, such GameFi are not getting too popular to gain the benefits of word of mouth.

“Ease of transactions, the ability to play anywhere, and the elevated levels of safety and security, GameFi enhances the overall gaming experience for game players while providing new sources of revenue for developers,” said Francis.

However, the concept involves giving players financial incentives to play and progress through games. Though, for the growth of industry, blockchain game developers must work harder to drive that.

“If regulators think that GameFi is gambling, then maybe they should ban NFT too,” said Lian of BigOne. “NFT is a lottery when it comes to mystery boxes. Regulators need to dive deep and not look at the surface.”

How Did Investors React To bitcoin’s ATH?

Bitcoin’s recent price surge ensured the cryptocurrency reached an all-time high, breaking beyond the $66,000 barrier for the first time, retaining its position as the world’s most valuable cryptocurrency. The market cap of all cryptocurrencies surpassed $2.53 trillion in May this year, reaching an all-time high of $2.64 trillion because of the latest Bitcoin price spike.

Bitcoin’s surge is the number one topic being discussed in our social media and Telegram groups at the moment. Many investors are astonished as to why Bitcoin’s price has risen so dramatically. Let’s look at what this implies for investors as I examine the reasons why the Bitcoin price hit an all-time high this time.

What’s causing Bitcoin’s price to rise?

The launch of the first Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF, trading under the ‘BITO’ ticker on Wall Street) on the New York Stock Exchange, is the key driving force behind this Bitcoin price spike. Many crypto sector investors around the world have been advocating the advantages of crypto ETFs for years, most notably Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, famous for their involvement in Facebook who had their Bitcoin ETF turned down by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in 2017. The success of this Bitcoin ETF has in turn set a precedent for other cryptocurrency ETFs to pass the audit, and it is also the primary driver for the recent rise in cryptocurrency values. The ProShares ETF witnessed

“one of the biggest first days on record for ETFs, raking in $550 million from crypto-hungry investors. Overall, more than $1.01 billion of shares changed hands,”

according to a report on business news channel CNBC.

Bitcoin Exchange Traded Funds (Bitcoin ETFs) are actually Bitcoin ‘futures’, not direct investments in Bitcoin. Futures are a kind of financial derivatives, which are essentially an agreement to buy and sell assets at a future date, meaning the assets are not owned by the investors. The fund’s main feature is that it allows non-crypto investors to buy Bitcoin without having to register a separate cryptocurrency trading account.

ProShares CEO Michael L. Sapir confirmed:

“BITO will open up exposure to bitcoin to a large segment of investors who have a brokerage account and are comfortable buying stocks and ETFs, but do not desire to go through the hassle and learning curve of establishing another account with a cryptocurrency provider and creating a bitcoin wallet.”

Simply put Bitcoin ETFs are not the same as buying Bitcoin directly.

“The futures-linked fund is subject to rollover risk, meaning that when it periodically closes positions in the futures contracts it holds, it can find itself, as is the case now, repurchasing new batches of future-dated contracts for more money. The situation, known as “contango,” eats into profits,”

confirmed the report in Fortune.

So, if you’re thinking about buying Bitcoin ETFs, make sure you know everything there is to know about futures trading.

What does the Bitcoin price surge mean?

I believe that if you plan to invest in cryptocurrencies for the long term rather than the short term, the latest all-time high of Bitcoin should be treated in the same way as any other volatile asset.

The benefit of buying and holding cryptocurrencies is that you don’t have to feel driven to trade when the price is extremely high or low because you’re working within a longer investing framework. Because of the volatility of cryptocurrencies, the market rises and falls to new highs and lows.

If you’ve done your homework and have a well-defined investment strategy, these price fluctuations shouldn’t affect your long-term position or approach. The best advice is to carefully weigh up the pros and cons of buying Bitcoin for the long term and make sure you have a well-thought-out crypto investment plan at the outset.

To put it another way, some active investors may believe now is a good opportunity to profit, while others believe Bitcoin will continue to grow in value. It was reported recently in Forbes that a panel of 50 bitcoin and cryptocurrency experts has predicted,

“the bitcoin price will continue to climb through 2021, hitting highs of around $80,000, before surging to $250,000 by 2025 and a staggering $5 million per bitcoin by 2030”.

When compared to buying and holding cryptocurrencies, active trading has the advantage of allowing investors to profit from market fluctuations and new all-time highs.

I feel that the launch of the Bitcoin ETF is an important step forward in the mainstream acceptance and usage of cryptocurrencies, which will benefit the whole crypto industry. Indeed, in a recent Motley Fool report, it’s suggested that Ethereum, crypto’s second-biggest player could be an even better bet.

“I think the long-term application building potential of the Ethereum network makes Ether a more attractive option for investors looking to benefit from the evolution of blockchain technologies,”

argued Keith Noonan.

“Ether’s price per token has surged roughly 458% across 2021’s trading. Despite significantly outpacing Bitcoin’s gains across the stretch, I still think Ethereum stands a good chance of outperforming Bitcoin over the long term,”

he added.

The Bitcoin ETF has helped institutional investors gain confidence and may open the door to new retail investors. According to the latest research, more than 50 million people in the US plan to invest in cryptocurrencies next year, and the Bitcoin ETF no doubt will play a crucial role in that adoption process.

The cryptocurrency sector has come a long way since Bitcoin’s launch in 2009, but there is still a long way to go and numerous technical obstacles to overcome before the industry reached mainstream adoption, with the blockchain sector as a whole still missing its “killer app,” and still awaiting its “Netscape moment.”

The crypto community has been waiting for its own version of this moment for years.

“And it may have just arrived with the first U.S. Bitcoin ETF begin trading, with more are on the way, and Bitcoin and Ethereum both hitting all new all-time highs,”

according to Decrypt’s executive editor Jeff John Roberts.

The future regulation of cryptocurrencies in many nations is still an “unknown possibility”. Individual countries are expected to introduce stronger regulatory frameworks and plans relating to the Bitcoin sector soon. As reported in the FT on October 13, the SEC’s indication that it is going to look more closely at how it regulates complex exchange-traded products has implications for future bitcoin ETF rules:

“Last week, SEC Chair Gary Gensler directed staff to study the risks of ETFs employing strategies ‘more complex than typical stocks and bonds’ and draft potential rules to address those concerns,”

the FT confirmed.

“Bitcoin ETF could attract more than $400 million in investment accordingly to Bloomberg. This is just the beginning based on what I see. Give it a few more months, we could see double of what we see right now. Australia’s corporate regulator has given the green light to a range of cryptocurrency-related ETFs, which could see Bitcoin and Ethereum-backed investment funds trading on the ASX in the coming months. This could triple the amount. I am optimistic.”

Anndy Lian, Chairman, BigONE Exchange commented on Twitter.

To conclude, as a result, I advise investors who are taking advantage of the current bull market to be prepared. The Bitcoin market may actually become more volatile because of planned regulatory reforms.

Anndy Lian’s Speech on “Cryptocurrency Regulation & Commercialisation 2021” at Digital Assets Investment Conference

Anndy Lian’s Speech on “Cryptocurrency Regulation & Commercialisation 2021” at Digital Assets Investment Conference

Anndy Lian gave a speech on “Cryptocurrency Regulation & Commercialisation 2021” at the Digital Assets Investment Conference on 13 November 2020. Anndy is an early blockchain adopter and experienced serial blockchain entrepreneur who is known for his work in the government sector. He is a best selling book author “Blockchain Revolution 2030” and currently the Advisory Board Member of Hyundai DAC Technology. In his speech, he gave an overview of regulations for cryptocurrency globally for 2021 & beyond, commercial adoption & implementation, and finally trends to look out for in 2021.

An Overview

He started by sharing some positive headlines:

– Investment banking giant JPMorgan is about to see the first commercial transactions with its own cryptocurrency, JPM Coin.
– PayPal allows Bitcoin and crypto spending. It has gone live today.
– Jack Dorsey’s Square buys $50 million in bitcoin
– Mode allocated up to 10% of cash reserves to purchase #Bitcoin and adopt it as a treasury reserve asset
– DBS Bank Is Planning to Launch a Digital Asset Exchange
– 22 Indian Bank Branches to Begin Offering Crypto Banking Services
– Alibaba Founder Jack Ma: “Digital Currencies” Are the Future
– World’s Second-Biggest Bank, China Construction Bank (CCB) has tapped Labuan-based digital asset exchange Fusang for the issuance of $3 billion worth of debt securities over a blockchain.

Then he also shared the not so positive headlines:

– BitMEX founder arrested for violation of US anti-money laundering laws
– China’s OKEx halts cryptocurrency withdrawals after founder arrested
– $150M Stolen by Hackers from KuCoin Crypto Exchange

Based on the above, Anndy felt that this is a positive sign in his opinion and stated that the blockchain and cryptocurrency space is taking its shape. Regulations are catching up. Investors are more aware of what they are investing in. And it is heading for mainstream.

Government attitude

The surveyed countries have categorized cryptocurrencies differently for tax purposes, as illustrated by the following examples:

Israel→taxed as an asset
Bulgaria→taxed as a financial asset
Switzerland→taxed as foreign currency
Denmark→subject to income tax and losses are deductible
United Kingdom→corporations pay corporate tax, unincorporated businesses pay income tax, individuals pay capital gains tax

In Singapore, the nation has started recognizing cryptocurrencies in 2017. The Payment Services Act (PSA) in Singapore, which came into effect on 28 January 2020, stated that cryptocurrency businesses must obtain a license from MAS to comply with AML/CFT regulations. This expands to companies that both transfer cryptocurrency within Singapore and outside of Singapore.

Similarly, more forward-looking countries have also started their public consultation for specific crypto-related bills to be passed.

To sum up, in this part, Lian emphasizes that we have to follow the rules and be upfront and open when dealing on unclear grounds. Having said so, the crypto space has been shifting and changing very fast. Experts should also find channels to update governments of the latest developments like Defi, AMM, and PMM and keep them informed of the latest scams and Ponzi schemes in the market. Proper education and awareness must be told to their people to avoid any form of fraud. Leading exchanges like Binance are always giving free lessons and updates on the industry. Information from credible sources and channels like them should be a useful reference. A formalized think tank in blockchain and cryptocurrencies accredited by the government must also be set up to be the voice.

Paths to commercialization

There must be clear incentives for the stakeholders and clients to drive proper ROI on the blockchain solutions. It should potentially have the ability to create revenue and cost-saving outcomes by using this new technology.

Blockchain technology implementation is no different from other technology. There must be clear strategic objectives, road maps, and specialized skill sets needed to drive commercialization and deliver business value.

It should also be an integrative approach, able to scale and provide a level of standardization so that existing data management and process standards can be applied to the blockchain solution.

Trends in 2021

Anndy highlighted that prop trading would be introduced, and social trading will gain more popularity in early 2021. On top of this, he also stated that STO would be more mature in 2021, more licenses will be approved, and will be operational in Q4.

Lian also mentioned briefly that DeFI would be more sustainable next year, stating that most of the higher risk companies would be flushed out from the ecosystem because of competition.

He mentioned that there would be more licensed LOTTO businesses getting into the crypto space.

Finally, he is optimistic that 2021 will hit a new milestone for the leading blockchain companies, and governments will be supportive. He also ended with an insightful quote.

“I do think that it is possible that Bitcoin goes to $100,000 but once it starts to affect governmental monetary policy and fiscal policy. You will see a whole different reaction.”- Anndy Lian
