Panel Discussion: Memecoin – Bubble or Opportunity?

Fueled by online communities and viral marketing, these tokens, often bearing the faces of internet memes, have exploded in popularity, leaving many to wonder: are meme coins a fleeting bubble, a legitimate investment opportunity, or a cultural phenomenon reshaping the financial landscape?

A recent panel discussion at Pheromones Party, a side event of Korea Blockchain Week 2024, tackled this question, bringing together experts from various corners of the crypto ecosystem to share their insights.

The Allure of Volatility and Community

Ruben Brons, representing Flow Traders, a global market-making firm, highlighted the perspective of institutional players. While acknowledging the significant trading volume generated by meme coins, he emphasized that institutions are primarily driven by stability and regulated products. With its inherent volatility, the meme coin landscape doesn’t yet offer the security and structure that traditional institutions seek.

However, the panel agreed that the volume is a testament to the power of meme coins. Sam, Chief Business Development Officer at 1inch, a leading DEX aggregator, argued that meme coins have successfully onboarded a new generation of crypto users. Their familiarity with internet culture and meme-driven humor makes them more receptive to this entry point into the crypto world.

Claire Dang, Head of Growth at a prominent Web3 educational platform, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the cultural significance of meme coins. She drew parallels between meme coins and the early days of NFTs, where shared ownership of digital assets fostered a sense of community and belonging. This cultural relevance, she argued, is a key factor in the sustainability of certain meme coins like Dogecoin and Shiba Inu, which have successfully cultivated dedicated communities around their brands.

Sustainability and the Institutional Question

While acknowledging meme coins’ community-building potential, the panel also addressed concerns about their long-term viability. Kevin, Head of Growth at Monad Labs, pointed out that the meme coin space is prone to rapid boom-and-bust cycles. While some tokens might experience explosive growth, many fade into obscurity just as quickly.

The question of institutional adoption also sparked debate. While some panelists, like Sam, believe that institutional interest in meme coins is still a long way off, others, like Anndy Lian, see the influx of capital into the broader crypto market as a positive sign, suggesting that institutions might eventually warm up to the idea of meme coins.

Navigating the Meme Coin Landscape

The panel concluded with a resounding message of caution for investors. While meme coins present a unique opportunity for profit, they also carry significant risks. Claire stressed the importance of education and due diligence, urging investors to thoroughly research any project before investing.

Anndy Lian ended the panel by saying, “The future of memes will mature into a more established asset class, attracting institutional capital and driving further innovation. For now, they remain a playground for retail investors, driven by speculation and fleeting trends, too. Only time will tell. However, one thing is clear: meme coins have tapped into a powerful cultural current, and their impact on the crypto ecosystem is undeniable.”

The Pheromones Party is organized by MemeCore and co-hosted by OKX Wallet, OKX Ventures, and Shiba Inu.

Anndy Lian is an early blockchain adopter and experienced serial entrepreneur who is known for his work in the government sector. He is a best selling book author- “NFT: From Zero to Hero” and “Blockchain Revolution 2030”.

DOGS token sets memecoin record with 17M users on The Open Network

DOGS token sets memecoin record with 17M users on The Open Network

The newly launched Dogs token could have staged the biggest token generation event (TGE) in memecoin history.

Over 17 million users have already claimed their Dogs (DOGS) tokens, which is a memecoin project on The Open Network inspired by Telegram co-founder Pavel Durov’s iconic dog drawing.

The Dogs Mini App has surpassed 53 million users, of whom 42.2 million are eligible for the token airdrop, making it the “largest meme TGE in cryptocurrency history,” according to a Sept. 10 Telegram post by the TON community.

“DOGS token is now held by 4.5M unique wallets on TON, putting it in a unique position — it has the most unique token holders on any chain ever, and it achieved this in just 2 weeks. Only USDt on TRON and Ethereum have more holders than DOGS.”

Although this number of holders is impressive for a memecoin, it is considerably smaller when compared to leading cryptocurrencies. For instance, Ether alone has over 273 million unique addresses, according to data from Ycharts.

The memecoin received significant investor interest following the TGE, which led to two major Dogs-related outages on TON.

While the volume of so-called “users” is impressive, the question of potential bots remains a significant factor to consider, according to Anndy Lian, intergovernmental blockchain expert and author of NFT: From Zero to Hero. Lian told Cointelegraph:

“We have to understand what kind of users they have. Are they able to KYC? Are they able to trade? Are they all bottled? In the view of whether they can be a top project or maybe even a “dogecoin killer”, we need to see the actual active users and how many are trading.”

“It’s 2024, bots are useless and non-sustainable,” added Lian.

Even bigger airdrops for Hamster Kombat and Catizen?

Despite the successful launch of the Dogs token, the TON community expects an even bigger impact on the upcoming Hamster Kombat and Catizen airdrops.

The two airdrops could come as soon as this September, according to the TON community’s post:

“In September, we anticipate even larger TGEs for Catizen and Hamster Kombat, which could bring tens or even hundreds of millions of users to the blockchain for the first time.”

Earlier in August, the Telegram-based viral clicker game Hamster Kombat released more details about its much-awaited airdrop, touted as the “largest in crypto history,” a week after the game reached 300 million players.

In terms of value, the Bonk (BONK) token staged the biggest memecoin airdrop, distributing over $1.3 million worth of tokens to eligible holders, making it the seventh largest airdrop across the entire crypto space, according to CoinGecko data.

Telegram–based Mini Apps are a “Trojan horse” for mass blockchain adoption

The crypto industry is increasingly betting on the onboarding potential of Telegram-based Mini Apps.

Telegram Mini Apps may be a “Trojan horse” for mass blockchain adoption, according to Justin Hyun, the director of investments at TON Foundation.

This is because onboarding the next 500 million users will require simple apps with “actual usability,” explained Hyun:

“But bringing 500 million people on-chain by 2028 — which is our goal — is going to require use cases that interact with the blockchain without the user knowing that in the front end.”

TON launched a $115 million community incentive program on March 20, with $38 million for token mining and user incentives, $22 million for airdrops, $15 million for The League developer ecosystem, and $40 million for liquidity pool boosts.

VanEck subsidiary’s memecoin index up 137% year-to-date

VanEck subsidiary’s memecoin index up 137% year-to-date

The MarketVector Meme Coin Index surged over 137% since the beginning of 2024 as the top memecoins continue to rise.

MarketVector’s memecoin index has outperformed the S&P 500 index by over 15x in 2024. In contrast, the S&P only saw a 9.3% price appreciation year-to-date (YTD), according to TradingView data.

The memecoin index is up over 137% year-to-date and 186% over the past year, trading at $76.60 as of 8:52 am UTC.

MarketVector, a subsidiary of the United States asset management giant VanEck, launched its memecoin index on Oct. 31, 2021. It includes the six largest memecoins: Dogecoin at a 30.7% allocation, Shiba Inu at a 28.3% allocation, 14.5% Pepe, 12.5% Dogwifhat (WIF), 7.14% Floki Inu (FLOKI) and 6.7% Bonk (BONK) tokens.

The “high risk, high return strategy” makes memecoins attractive for investors with a speculative nature and will likely keep the top coins relevant, according to Anndy Lian, intergovernmental blockchain expert and author of NFT: From Zero to Hero. Lian told Cointelegraph:

“This creates a viral effect that can lead to rapid price increases. Many investors are attracted to the potential for quick, high returns. Memecoins are known for their volatility, which can result in substantial gains for traders who time their investments right.”

Looking at the memecoin fund’s individual components, Pepe was the biggest gainer, rising 482% YTD, followed by Floki, up 372%, and Shiba Inu, up 112%, taking third place. Bonk was the worst performer, up over 59% YTD, but still beating the returns of the S&P 500 by over sixfold.

Memecoins often deliver exponential returns, even compared to some of the top cryptocurrencies. Compared to the memecoin index’s 137% appreciation, the top altcoins, excluding the 10 largest cryptocurrencies, saw their market caps only rise 24% YTD.

Top altcoins experience weekly sell-off

Despite the profitable yearly returns, the six largest memecoins saw a sell-off this week, raising concerns of a potential end to the memecoin season. Over the past five days, Dogwifhat fell over 15% as the biggest loser, while Pepe fell over 5% — the smallest decline among the top memecoins.

Since memecoins hold no underlying utility, it’s difficult for traders and technical analysts to predict their price action, which is mainly driven by social media hype cycles for each memecoin.

Trading volume is often used to gauge sentiment around memecoins. Weekly memecoin trading volume has been declining since early March across all blockchains, as reported by Cointelegraph.
