Biggest Friend.tech whale dumps tokens as users struggle to claim airdrop

The largest airdrop recipient on Friend.tech has sold all their tokens just hours after the airdrop, leading to concerns over the token’s price action.

Just hours after the Friend.tech airdrop went live on May 3, the largest whale, known as “Murphys1d,” sold over 55,000 of the newly-issued Friend tokens, blockchain data shows.

Beyond the sell-off, some users were unable to claim their airdrop tokens, including crypto investor Luke Martin, who wrote in a May 3 X post:

“Watching the value of my airdrop go from 7 figures to 5 figures in the span of 2 hours while I keep refreshing the page trying to claim….still can’t claim. Adds insult to injury.”

Martin added that the whale wallet seems to be linked to a fake X account with no activity, enabling it to farm over 500,000 Friend.tech points risk-free.

The new Friend.tech (FRIEND) token has fallen over 52.5% since its launch, from $3.26 to just $1.32 as of 9:50 am UTC. The token’s price fell over 32% in the last hour before publication, according to CoinGecko data.

While the selling by the largest Friend.tech whale may impact the market in the short term, it doesn’t necessarily dictate a token’s long-term trajectory, according to Anndy Lian, intergovernmental blockchain expert and author of NFT: From Zero to Hero. Lian told Cointelegraph:

“While it might cause a short-term dip in price due to increased supply and potential panic selling, it doesn’t always mean a long-term downtrend. To me, it is a good thing […] The sell-off would mean a more decentralized distribution of tokens. A broader distribution reduces the risk of a single entity having excessive control over the project.”

However, Lian noted that the token’s value will mainly rely on the community’s trust in Friend.tech and how the team manages the current situation.

Airdrop farmers continue to plague token launches

The mysterious Friend.tech whale is another example of a professional airdrop farmer (squatter) who interacts with emerging protocols solely for the airdrop rewards, often with multiple wallets to compound rewards.

The main issue with airdrop farmers is that they tend to market sell all their airdropped tokens, creating significant sell pressure and resulting in more panic selling by legitimate protocol users.

An example of this came at the end of April, when the Omni Network’s OMNI token fell 55% in less than 18 hours following its airdrop, losing over half its market capitalization.

In March 2023, it was revealed that airdrop hunters consolidated $3.3 million worth of tokens from Arbitrum’s ARB airdrop from 1,496 wallets into just two wallets they had controlled.

NFT tech expands realm of future art

NFT tech expands realm of future art

With the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence technology, the role of NFT technology goes beyond protecting the copyrights of digital art collectibles, and into expanding the realm of art, with diverse implications for the future art world.

Throughout the NFT 2023 Seoul Conference, held at Coex in southern Seoul on Friday, the future roles of NFT technology were illuminated.

Dedicated to the theme, “the Utilization and Role of NFT Art in the Future Art,” the second part of the conference was filled with speeches by CEOs and technology experts with sharp insights into AI, the metaverse, blockchain technology and NFTs.

The session kicked off with a keynote speech by Cha In-hyuk, former CEO of CJ OliveNetworks.

Throughout the speech, he underscored the dramatic ways in which generative AI can transform the content creation market by enabling the invention of brand-new content including but not limited to texts, images, music and videos, with algorithms based on diverse input.

Cha also envisioned a future in which AI technologies and NFTs are used by businesses not only as a “quick monetizing tool” but also as a tool to revive humanity in the international community by “restoring our values and being a protector of the uniqueness of each of us.”

The emphasis on community was stressed in the second speech by Mariko Nishimura, co-founder and CEO of Heart Catch.

“By acquiring an NFT artwork, you can become a digital villager in Yamakoshi village along with only 800 other residents in Japan,” said Nishimura, citing one of the Japanese projects utilizing NFTs to revitalize depopulated villages.

She also advocated for the integration of art into businesses by highlighting the ability of art to spur “innovative thinking” among entrepreneurs.

The following speech by Aleksandra Artamonovskaja, lead partner of Joyn.xyz, shed light on the role of decentralized curation in facilitating opportunities for emerging artists from various communities to showcase their artworks in virtual galleries.

She added that decentralized curation also enhances “transparency” as the audience can access information about the open-call process, including the identities of the curators, the number of artworks submitted and the criteria used to shortlist artworks.

“Despite the declining trading volume, NFT has not died,” asserted Andy Lian, the Singaporean best-selling author of “Blockchain Revolution 2030,” as he stressed the promising potential of NFTs, which can ride on the growing markets of AI and Web 3.0.

“Advancements in AI technology have resulted in the great synergy between AI and NFT, enabling the invention of unique digital assets,” he said.

He also hinted at the necessity for artists to explore collaboration with AI by building on and refining artworks first generated by AI.

Anndy Lian Believes Blockchain Tech Drives Innovation and Productivity in Enterprise Businesses

Anndy Lian Believes Blockchain Tech Drives Innovation and Productivity in Enterprise Businesses

The World Blockchain Summit (WBS) organized by Trescon has speakers from government officials, blockchain evangelists and business leaders in the region.

The topic about Blockchain for Enterprise is discussed in one of the key panels at the summit. The panel has a good mix of Singapore blockchain experts: Anndy Lian- Member of Gyeongsangbuk-do Blockchain Special Committee, Government of the Republic of Korea and Blockchain Advisor of Asian Productivity Organisation, Elias Tan- Singapore Lead, NEO, Joseph Toh- Founder of SignKeys, Hock Yun Khoon- Partner, Blockchain Fund 1 of Tembusu Partners and Yi Ming- Partner of TRIVE.

Anndy Lian who is an advisor to intergovernmental organisations brought up a few good points during in this panel. He has urged corporations when adopting blockchain to be realistic and resourceful. Companies and people in blockchain must also keep an open mind. He believes why South Korea is successful in blockchain is due to their openness. He has seen this in Seoul, Gyeongsangbuk and Jeju especially where the governors are pushing hard for blockchain.

Anndy continued by saying “Blockchain is not everything. In order to adopt enterprise blockchain solutions, the companies need to access the need for this new technology and how they want to adopt it. Companies need to be realistic and not adopt blockchain blindly. They need to be resourceful and find the right experts to attain their blockchain vision. Blockchain technologies and companies should also work together more, collaborate often and share the knowledge with each other! Blockchain is a perfect enterprise tool for innovation and productivity if we apply the right know-how.”

Elias Tan echoed to the remarks and he said “I agree with Anndy Lian. The blockchain communities should work more together. It is not easy to get companies to understand blockchain. I faced the same issues when I deal with my family members. They do not see the need to implement blockchain. I took a long time and through numerous meeting with the family and board members to let them understand how this technology work. So when there is a chance to implement blockchain for companies, we must show them what blockchain can really do for them. We need to do our best!”

Hock Yun Khoon then went on to share some of the more successful case studies that are impactful for industries such as airlines, supply chain, logistics, medical and finance. He sees that blockchain technology is the way forward and companies should start to study about it and we will see a higher adoption rate in the near future.

Off the stage, Blockcast.cc has also managed to catch hold of some delegates to ask them about how they feel about the blockchain industry. Singapore delegations such as Manoj Thacker of Sky & Institute of Blockchain Singapore, Jocelyn Yu of Dgroup, Haw Leng of RegTech, Janet Lee of Venture Capital Network were also present and all of them are very positive about the new technology and want to see more truly Singapore driven blockchain initiatives.

“I flew in from Mauritius for the summit and I am glad to see like-minded people, I had good discussions with some of the panelists too. Coming here gives me more confidence and proved that South East Asia such as Singapore is a good place to further develop the blockchain industry.” Sebastien Ng, Founder of Masternode Ventures said.

More than 300 delegates have attended this event at Marina Bay Sands Singapore on 25 July 2019. WBS has provided a platform for regional and international organizations who are interested in the blockchain technologies to interact and exchange ideas. We look forward to the next WBS.
