Wall Street May Embrace Tokenized Stocks, But Not on Public Blockchains

Many crypto enthusiasts dream of trading traditional equities around the clock on public blockchains. They imagine a decentralized utopia where anyone can buy fractional shares of major corporations without traditional brokers.

This vision fundamentally misunderstands how institutional finance operates. In my opinion, major tokenized stocks will never migrate to public networks. The future of twenty-four-hour equity trading belongs exclusively to private or semi-private blockchain architectures.

Regulatory Signals Fuel the Narrative

The United States Securities and Exchange Commission recently proposed rescinding two key rules under Regulation National Market System.

These rules require trades to be routed to the national best price and prohibit locked or crossed quotes across venues. Analysts like Alex Thorn note that automated market makers on public chains conflict with these requirements because they execute against isolated liquidity pools without checking off-chain quotes. Removing the rules could theoretically open the door to compliant on-chain trading of tokenized United States equities.

However, this remains a medium-term structural adjustment rather than an immediate green light. The proposal still faces a lengthy comment process, and platforms would still need to register as exchanges or alternative trading systems, satisfy clearing obligations, and ensure token holders retain voting and dividend rights.

Traditional market groups also warn that removing the rules could reduce price transparency and fragment markets.

Operational Constraints of Public Blockchains

Even with favorable regulations, public blockchains present significant operational hurdles for institutional equity trading. Gas fee volatility remains a primary deterrent. A surge in retail activity can congest public networks and sharply increase transaction costs.

Institutions cannot risk large equity settlements being delayed or becoming more expensive because of unrelated retail traffic. Traditional finance requires deterministic execution.

A bank executing a large block trade needs certainty around cost and settlement timing. Institutional traders require millisecond precision and reliable finality. Public networks prioritize openness and censorship resistance over the predictable throughput global capital markets demand.

Maximal Extractable Value (MEV) presents another critical barrier. Public blockchains broadcast pending transactions in a public mempool before execution. Sophisticated actors deploy bots to scan this information and front-run large orders by manipulating transaction ordering.

Billions of dollars have been extracted through these practices in recent years. This directly conflicts with the fiduciary obligations of traditional brokers and institutional mandates requiring best execution. Financial institutions are unlikely to embrace a system that permits such extraction from client order flow.

Privacy, Compliance, and Control Requirements

Privacy and compliance requirements further strengthen the case against public ledgers. Traditional finance operates under strict Know Your Customer and Anti-Money Laundering regulations.

Public blockchains expose transaction data to everyone. Institutions cannot broadcast their strategic positioning or client holdings on a transparent ledger. Regulators also require the ability to freeze assets or reverse transactions under specific legal circumstances. Public blockchains generally resist these interventions, creating challenges when compliance frameworks require administrative control.

Private networks provide the logical solution. A private blockchain functions as a shared, cryptographically secure ledger maintained by a trusted group of regulated institutions.

This architecture delivers many of the benefits of distributed ledger technology without the unpredictability of public networks. Competitors cannot observe order flows, trade sizes, or account balances. Transactions remain confidential between authorized participants and regulators.

These networks can also streamline clearing and settlement by enabling institutions to transact directly with one another. This lowers costs, reduces counterparty risk, and supports continuous settlement. Enterprise networks further offer dedicated support and contractual service guarantees that public protocols do not provide.

Institutional Adoption Is Already Underway

Major financial institutions already recognize this reality. J.P. Morgan operates its Onyx platform for tokenized intraday repurchase agreement trades and payments. Goldman Sachs uses its Digital Asset Platform to issue and trade digital bonds and other institutional instruments.

HSBC’s Orion platform supports tokenized gold and digital bond issuance. These examples demonstrate that financial institutions view blockchain primarily as infrastructure for automation, synchronization, and efficiency within controlled environments.

The Direction of Tokenized Equities

Market participants continue to pursue the vision of trading major corporate shares on public decentralized exchanges. Yet the structural, regulatory, and operational realities of global finance point elsewhere.

The Securities and Exchange Commission may eventually adapt market rules for digital assets, but the infrastructure itself will remain largely in private hands.

Tokenized equities are far more likely to thrive on secure, permissioned networks designed for institutional performance and compliance than on fully public chains. The future of financial innovation is not public exposure. It is private, efficient infrastructure built to meet the demands of modern capital markets.

The digital asset landscape is currently grappling with a severe wave of selling pressure that has pushed major cryptocurrencies to multi-month lows. This downturn stems from a combination of deteriorating macroeconomic conditions, heavy institutional redemptions, and an intense cascade of derivatives liquidations.

Bitcoin has dropped 2.01 per cent over the past 24 hours to trade at US$59,782.21, closely tracking a broader market contraction of 1.85 per cent. Ethereum has suffered an even steeper decline, falling 3.46 per cent to US$1,567.16 and underperforming the market leader. Together, these movements have pulled the total cryptocurrency market capitalisation down by 1.76 per cent to a yearly low of US$2.06T.

The primary driver behind this market-wide reset is a sharp shift in macroeconomic sentiment, highlighted by an unexpected U.S. Personal Consumption Expenditures inflation reading. The inflation metric printed at 4.1 per cent, marking a three-year high. This hotter-than-expected data has reignited fears of a prolonged period of restrictive monetary policy, with market participants quickly increasing bets on further Federal Reserve interest rate hikes. Because the cryptocurrency market shares an 88 per cent correlation with the S&P 500 index, digital assets are behaving as highly sensitive risk assets within a tightening global liquidity environment.

This macroeconomic pressure quickly translated into physical selling across institutional channels. U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded their largest single-day redemption since early June, with investors pulling US$469.08M from these products on Wednesday, June 24. This massive exit represents the fifth consecutive day of net institutional outflows, led primarily by BlackRock and its spot product, which accounted for a significant portion of the capital flight.

At the same time, spot Ethereum funds experienced US$30.24M in net redemptionson the same day. This persistent drain on institutional liquidity has removed a critical layer of price support and created automated selling pressure as fund managers liquidate their underlying digital holdings to meet redemption demands.

Beyond institutional product outflows, the spot market faced unexpected structural headwinds from major trading platforms. Rumours and reports began circulating across social networks that prominent global exchanges, specifically Binance and Coinbase, were actively offloading large quantities of Bitcoin. This potential institutional distribution added to an already significant supply overhang, shaking retail investor confidence and accelerating the downward price action.

As spot prices cracked, the decline triggered a violent mechanical unwinding in the derivatives market, which drastically amplified the velocity of the sell-off. Over a 24-hour window, forced liquidations across the entire cryptocurrency market surpassed US$1B. Leveraged positions linked directly to Bitcoin accounted for US$428.87M of this total, with long positions making up US$337M of the wiped-out contracts. Over the final 12 hours of the crash, short positions accounted for 63 per cent of the immediate liquidations.

Meanwhile, over-leveraged traders in the Ethereum market saw US$230M in contracts forcibly closed. Despite this massive purge of speculative bets, average funding rates remarkably managed to stay positive, confirming that many market participants were caught off guard in heavily leveraged long positions.

This severe deleveraging event has pushed technical indicators into deep underbought territory. Ethereum broke decisively below both its seven-day simple moving average of US$1,675.94 and its 30-day simple moving average of US$1,760.28. Its Relative Strength Index has dropped to 30.5, which confirms deeply oversold conditions but offers no immediate structural support. For the broader market, the overall capitalisation sits precariously at its US$2.06T baseline, with a global Relative Strength Index of 35.89 suggesting that while the market is stretched to the downside, a definitive bullish reversal has not yet commenced.

Looking ahead, the immediate trend for the digital asset space remains distinctly bearish, though the market is rapidly approaching a massive technical inflection point.

I sat down with content creator Dan for an in-depth conversation about my new book, Web4: The Age of Autonomous Intelligence. I have also grown increasingly frustrated with the decentralization bluff of Web3.
During our chat, we covered a lot of ground, from the bursting AI startup bubble and the rise of Chinese AI models to the regulatory gray areas of platforms like Hyperliquid. But at the core of our discussion was a singular vision: how AI can rescue crypto from its centralized flaws and usher in the era of Web4.
The Web3 Decentralization Bluff
Let us be honest: Web3 is not truly decentralized. When you look under the hood of most projects, the reality is that a handful of VCs and insiders hold the majority of the tokens. They sit in a room, make decisions, and call it a DAO. I have participated in too many governance votes to know that it is largely an illusion. When five entities hold all the power, the network is not decentralized but rather an oligarchy driven by capital and greed.
This centralization is dangerous. If those few individuals are brilliant, the project might survive, but if they make poor decisions, the entire ecosystem can collapse. We need a system that removes human bias and greed from the equation, which brings me to the core thesis of my book.
Enter Web4: AI as the Ultimate Governor
Web4 is the natural evolution of Web3, powered by autonomous intelligence. In my book, I propose a radical but necessary shift where AI must act as the connective and unbiased layer of governance. Imagine a system where the AI brain holds over 51 percent of the governance power.
The AI would not be swayed by insider greed or whale manipulation. Instead, it would analyze data, calculate probabilities, and present unbiased outcomes. The core team and the community would then debate and vote on these AI-generated proposals.
By combining the objective analysis of AI with human consensus, we can create a truly fair, decentralized, and resilient network. AI needs governance, but that governance must be decentralized rather than controlled by monopolized tech giants. By integrating Zero-Knowledge Machine Learning, we can also ensure privacy and verifiable AI computations on-chain.
The AI Landscape: Bubbles, Infrastructure, and the Chinese Advantage
We also discussed the current state of the AI industry. While top-tier AI companies are heading toward trillion-dollar IPOs, the second and third tiers are facing a harsh reality. The funding bubble is bursting as investors now demand tangible results instead of slick presentations.
Furthermore, vibe coding is flooding the space with low-effort projects, much like the memecoin craze. When it comes to the models themselves, the output of US frontier models and Chinese open-source models like Qwen or DeepSeek is nearly identical, with perhaps a 1% difference. Chinese models have a massive long-term advantage due to abundant energy, cheap computing power, and low operational costs. Whoever controls computing power and electricity wins the AI war, and open-source Chinese models are perfectly positioned to dominate the global market.
Crypto’s Future and the Regulatory Reality Check
Despite my deep dive into AI, I still firmly believe that cryptocurrency is the future of money. We must respect regulatory frameworks to ensure long-term success. I expressed concerns regarding platforms like Hyperliquid.
While they are doing an incredible job bringing tokenized stocks on-chain, their aggressive buyback models and lack of KYC raise red flags. You cannot operate a no-KYC platform offering 50x leverage on the S&P 500 and expect to avoid US regulators. Contrast this with Polymarket, which implemented KYC for US users and successfully positioned itself as a tech platform. Understanding regulatory frameworks is what separates a sustainable trillion-dollar market cap from a black swan event. If you understand how regulation works, you avoid the unlimited loops of legal trouble.
AI Detecting AI and the Road Ahead
Finally, we touched on the societal impacts of AI, particularly deepfakes. As AI-generated videos become indistinguishable from reality, it is naive to rely on humans to label their content. The only viable solution is for AI to detect AI. We need decentralized, automated systems to verify the authenticity of media, especially in the context of elections and global propaganda.
