As Bitcoin Hits $25,000 Ceiling, Experts Say Investors Turning To Crypto As A Safe Haven

The world’s largest digital currency Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) broke the $25,000 mark last week, reaching a new high for 2023, a stark contrast to November when the cryptocurrency saw a significant drop to a 2022 low of $15,742 following the FTX (CRYPTO: FTT) crisis.

The apex crypto’s value began to increase again in January and continued to do so over the course of the month.

The last time BTC’s value was around $25,000 was in mid-June of last year, after which it dropped to a range of $19,000 to $21,000 where it remained stagnant for several months.

According to the experts, the surge in BTC’s price has made it an attractive option for those who are skeptical of traditional financial institutions.

Azra Kojadinovic, President of, the Serbia Chapter says the recent surge in BTC prices has sparked renewed interest in cryptocurrencies, and it is likely that this trend will continue in the future.

“BTC’s long-term outlook remains positive, and ETH’s increasing popularity as a platform for creating dApps is driving its growth. As the adoption of cryptocurrencies continues to increase, the future of the cryptocurrency market looks bright,” Kojadinovic said.

According to Whitney Setiawan, research analyst at crypto exchange Bitrue, along with BTC’s rise, Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) has also breached $1,700 for the first time in more than 3 months.

“While enthusiasm is high, we may see long-term holders taking their gains, leading to a somewhat visible negative correction in short to mid-term. However, this recent upsurge has shown that the industry is becoming somewhat immune to negative regulatory pressures, and investors are taking positions that could change their bottom line in the future,” Setiawan said.

Jenny Zheng, BD Lead, Bybit Web3 says with the proliferation of businesses and merchants embracing BTC as a viable payment option, the demand for the cryptocurrency has experienced a marked increase, thereby propelling its value upwards.

“This groundswell of adoption is further reinforced by the rising prevalence of BTC wallets, indicating a mounting number of individuals purchasing and retaining BTC as a secure store of value or investment vehicle. The recent trend of generating BTC non-fungible tokens (NFTs) is expected to exert additional pressure on adopting BTC,” according to Zheng.

The surge in BTC price is not solely attributed to its intrinsic value but is also heavily influenced by the current global economic climate.

The unprecedented nature of the pandemic has caused economic turmoil, resulting in market volatility and leaving investors with a sense of insecurity.

Anndy Lian, an intergovernmental blockchain expert, says investors, in response, are increasingly turning to alternative investments that offer a hedge against inflation and economic instability.

“BTC is viewed by many as a safe haven asset, and its decentralized nature makes it an attractive option for those skeptical of traditional financial institutions,” he says.

At the time of publication on Sunday, Bitcoin was trading at $24,571, down 2% in 24 hours, but up over 11% in the past seven days.

Exploring The Investment Trends Of Crypto Venture Capitalists In Today’s “Bullish” Market

Exploring The Investment Trends Of Crypto Venture Capitalists In Today’s “Bullish” Market

The value of a cryptocurrency can be influenced by various factors, including news about the cryptocurrency and its underlying technology, government regulations, and overall market conditions. The market can also be influenced by investor sentiment, which can be affected by a wide range of events. Just a month ago, everyone is still saying its a bear market. As of this week, everyone is cheering for the current bull run. Bitcoin reached its highest price since mid-August by breaking through the price ceiling of US$24,000. This was largely attributed to investors liquidating almost US$70 million of predominantly short-position bets.

There are many different types of investments in the cryptocurrency space, and the popular specific investments can vary over time.

More Popular Types Of Cryptocurrency Investments

Buying And Holding: This is the most straightforward and common investment strategy. Investors buy a cryptocurrency like Bitcoin or Ethereum and hold onto it for the long term, with the expectation that its value will increase over time.

Mining: Mining involves using computer hardware to solve complex mathematical problems and verify transactions on a blockchain network. Miners are rewarded with newly minted cryptocurrency as an incentive for their work.

Staking: Staking involves holding a certain amount of a cryptocurrency in a wallet and locking it up to support the network’s security and transaction processing. In exchange, stakers receive rewards in the form of newly minted coins.

Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) and Initial Exchange Offerings (IEOs): ICOs and IEOs are ways for companies to raise funds by selling newly created cryptocurrencies to investors. This strategy can be risky as some ICOs and IEOs have turned out to be scams.

Cryptocurrencies have several investment theses. Some investors believe that they have the potential to replace traditional fiat currencies, while others see them mainly as a store of value or a means of exchange. In addition, some investors see the underlying blockchain technology as having the potential to revolutionize a variety of industries, from supply chain management to identity verification.

Some Specific Investment Theses For Cryptocurrencies

The use of cryptocurrency as a means of exchange: Some people believe that cryptocurrencies will eventually be used as a primary means of exchange, replacing traditional fiat currencies.

The store of value thesis: Some people believe that cryptocurrencies will eventually be used as a store of value, similar to gold.

The blockchain revolution thesis: Some people believe that the underlying blockchain technology has the potential to revolutionize a wide range of industries and that investing in cryptocurrencies is a way to get in on the ground floor of this technological revolution.

The “greater fool” theory: Some people believe that the price of a cryptocurrency will continue to go up as long as someone is willing to buy it at a higher price, even if there is no intrinsic value to the cryptocurrency. This is sometimes referred to as the “greater fool” theory of investing.

Venture capitalists (VCs) are individuals or firms who provide funding to early-stage companies in exchange for an equity stake. In the cryptocurrency space, VCs have traditionally invested directly in cryptocurrencies or blockchain-based startups, but recently there has been a shift in focus towards investments in blockchain infrastructure and applications.

The fall of FTX and other crypto exchanges has led VCs to become more cautious about investing in cryptocurrencies directly. Instead, they are looking to invest in companies that are building out the underlying technology and infrastructure of the blockchain. This includes companies that are developing blockchain-based platforms, building decentralized applications, or working on other blockchain-related projects.

The reason for this shift is that many VCs see a long-term potential for blockchain technology to disrupt various industries and believe that investing in the underlying infrastructure will yield better returns than investing directly in cryptocurrencies, which are known for their volatility. Another reason for this shift is that the regulatory landscape for cryptocurrencies is still uncertain and can create risks for investors. By investing in blockchain infrastructure and applications, VCs can mitigate some of these risks and potentially realize greater returns in the long run.

Some Specific Areas Of Interest For VCs In The Cryptocurrency Space.

Blockchain infrastructure: VCs are increasingly supporting startups working towards building a robust blockchain infrastructure. These companies focus on developing innovative solutions that can potentially revolutionize the blockchain ecosystem. One key area of interest for VCs is the development of new consensus algorithms. These algorithms enable network participants to agree on a shared state of the blockchain without relying on a centralized authority. Some companies are working on proof-of-stake (PoS) algorithms that reduce the energy consumption associated with proof-of-work (PoW) algorithms, which are used by Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

They are also investing in layer1 companies, which are startups that focus on building the foundational infrastructure layer of the blockchain. These companies are working on creating new and innovative technologies that can potentially improve the scalability, security, and performance of the blockchain. Former team members from traditional finance giant Jump Trading have established a tech startup called Monad Labs, which has raised $19 million in seed funding. The company intends to create a new blockchain that addresses the shortcomings of existing layer 1 protocols. According to a statement, the Monad blockchain will be introduced on a testnet in the coming months, with plans for mainnet deployment later this year. The blockchain will use the proof-of-stake consensus mechanism and be compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), allowing projects on Monad to interact with the EVM software platform. This interoperability will enable developers from other blockchain projects to construct decentralized applications that can work together on the Ethereum network.

Web3 solutions: Web3, also known as Web 3.0, is the next iteration of the World Wide Web, and it is built on blockchain technology. It is designed to be more decentralized, secure, and open than the current Web. VCs are looking for projects that align with the core principles of Web3 and have the potential to drive its adoption and growth. This is another rising trend. Just last week alone, I noted more than $20 million were raised in the Web3 space.

  • Caldera, a provider of Web3 application infrastructure, has secured a total of $9 million in funding from two investment rounds. The funding was spearheaded by established financial powerhouse Sequoia Capital and digital currency-focused firm Dragonfly.
  • UK-based startup Nefta, which focuses on Web3 in the gaming and entertainment industry, has disclosed raising $5 million in a seed funding round led by the Future Fund of venture firm Play Ventures.
  • In a seed funding round co-led by Insignia Venture Partners, MindWorks Capital, and Signum Capital, Sending Labs has raised $12.5 million. The company’s objective is to offer a more accessible approach for developers and users to construct and engage with decentralized communication-based applications (dapps).

I noted amongst the VCs in my network they are also looking at blockchain applications. VCs have also invested in companies that are using the blockchain to build new applications, such as supply chain management platforms, decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms, and decentralized identity solutions. Interoperability and cross-chain solutions, for example, aim to enable different blockchain networks to communicate and interact with each other and are also one of the top investment choices.

In my opinion, investing in blockchain infrastructure and applications is likely to promote the expansion and maturation of the cryptocurrency ecosystem, and potentially generate more sustainable returns for investors over the long term. However, it’s important to recognize that VC investment is just one aspect of the broader cryptocurrency ecosystem. Other investors, such as hedge funds, family offices, and individual investors, may have differing investment theses and strategies, which can also impact the market. It’s crucial to stay informed about the various factors that can influence the cryptocurrency space and adapt investment strategies accordingly. As a licensed fund manager and a VC myself for over a decade, this is my humble note to all.

“To achieve the best returns in the crypto space, it’s important to believe in the underlying technology, focus on community growth, and capitalize on market trends. By understanding the technology behind a particular cryptocurrency and its potential for solving real-world problems, investors can make informed investment decisions that align with their long-term goals.”- Anndy Lian

India eyes global crypto regulations in G20: Are we ready for uniformity?

India eyes global crypto regulations in G20: Are we ready for uniformity?

India holds the G20 presidency this year and is a member of the G20 and the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). At the G20 and FATF meetings, India has been actively engaged in discussions on the issue of cryptocurrencies and their potential risks, particularly concerning money laundering and terrorist financing. I think that cryptocurrency regulation is likely to be one of the many things that will be talked about this year while the G20 is in charge.

In recent years, India has taken a cautious approach to cryptocurrencies and expressed concerns about their potential for illegal activities. In India, although trading in cryptocurrency assets is not prohibited, the introduction of a severe tax rate last year has significantly reduced such activity.

Additionally, offsetting losses from one cryptocurrency asset with gains from another has been prohibited. The Indian government has also discussed the possibility of implementing stricter regulations for cryptocurrencies, although it has not yet taken any concrete steps in this direction.

At the G20 and FATF meetings, India emphasized the need for international cooperation in addressing the risks posed by cryptocurrencies, including sharing information and best practices among countries. India has also supported the FATF’s efforts to develop global standards for regulating cryptocurrencies and has expressed its commitment to working with other countries to ensure the effective implementation of these standards.

What is the purpose of the proposed uniform regulations for cryptocurrency in India?

The purpose of the proposed uniform regulations for cryptocurrency in India is to provide a clear and consistent framework for using and managing cryptocurrencies. It is aimed to addressing the various risks associated with cryptocurrencies, such as financial stability, consumer protection, and illicit activities, while also promoting the development of the cryptocurrency industry in India.

The proposed laws are aimed at ensuring that the use of cryptocurrencies is in line with the overall goals of the Indian economy and that the risks associated with cryptocurrencies are effectively mitigated. The Indian government wants to make the cryptocurrency market fair for everyone and encourage people to use cryptocurrencies in a responsible and open way.

In addition to mitigating the risks posed by cryptocurrencies, it would also promote the growth and innovation of the cryptocurrency industry in India. By having clear and stable rules, the Indian government hopes to encourage investment, encourage innovation, and support the growth of the industry, which will help the Indian economy as a whole.

What are the key features of the proposed regulations?

The key features of the proposal may include provisions related to the licensing and registration of cryptocurrency exchanges, the reporting of suspicious transactions, and the implementation of anti-money laundering and countering the financing of terrorism (AML/CFT) measures. The rules may also include rules to protect consumers and keep their information private, as well as requirements to keep records and report to regulatory authorities.

It may outline the responsibilities of various stakeholders in the cryptocurrency ecosystem, such as exchanges, wallet providers, and users. They may set standards for their operation and conduct. They may also specify the types of cryptocurrencies that can be traded or held by individuals or businesses and establish rules for their safe storage and transfer.

The regulations may also address issues related to taxation and the treatment of cryptocurrency-related transactions for tax purposes. They may specify the tax implications of holding, buying, and selling cryptocurrencies and the tax treatment of income generated from cryptocurrency-related activities.

How will the introduction of these regulations impact the cryptocurrency industry in India?

Currently, the status of cryptocurrency regulations in India is somewhat uncertain. While the Indian government has expressed concerns about the potential risks posed by cryptocurrencies, it has not yet taken any concrete steps to regulate the industry. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has issued several warnings about using cryptocurrencies but has not yet implemented any specific regulations.

The introduction of these regulations may have a significant impact on the cryptocurrency industry in India. The regulations may create a more favorable environment for the industry’s growth by providing a clear and consistent framework for using cryptocurrencies. However, the regulations may impose additional costs and compliance requirements on cryptocurrency exchanges, which may impact their profitability. Additionally, the regulations may affect consumer behaviour as they may increase consumer confidence in the safety and security of cryptocurrencies.

In recent years, there has been growing interest in cryptocurrencies in India, and many cryptocurrency exchanges have emerged to meet this demand. But without clear and consistent rules, the use and management of cryptocurrencies in India are mostly uncontrolled.

How will it affect the wider Indian economy?

The proposed regulations for cryptocurrency in India may have a broader impact on the Indian economy. If the regulations effectively reduce the risks associated with cryptocurrencies, they may increase investor confidence and boost the industry’s growth. This, in turn, may positively impact employment and economic development.

But if the rules are too strict or hard to follow, they could slow down the growth of the industry and make it less likely to help the economy.

Are we ready for uniform crypto regulations?

This is a key question. Are we ready?

By introducing uniform regulations, the Indian government hopes to ensure that cryptocurrencies are used safely and securely while also protecting investors’ interests. From my point of view, the need for uniformity in the regulation of cryptocurrencies among G20 countries is a matter of debate. On the one hand, uniform regulations can help ensure a level playing field for businesses and prevent regulatory arbitrage, where companies flock to more lenient laws. This can also help to reduce the potential for cross-border risks to the financial system.

On the other hand, each country has unique economic, political, and cultural contexts and may have different needs and priorities regarding regulating cryptocurrencies. For example, some countries may put more emphasis on protecting consumers, while others may put more emphasis on fighting money laundering and terrorism financing.

Ultimately, the ideal approach to regulating cryptocurrencies is likely to be a balance between these two perspectives, where countries adopt a standard set of principles while still retaining the flexibility to tailor regulations to their specific circumstances. This approach can help make sure that cryptocurrencies are regulated in a way that encourages innovation, protects consumers, and reduces potential risks to the financial system while still respecting the sovereignty of each country.

I think it is too early to have uniform regulations across G20 countries on cryptocurrency. They did not perfect it in traditional finance; it will be a lot harder for cryptocurrency. Regulations should be localized if they want to move fast to catch up with the speed of changes in the cryptocurrency space.

The proposal for uniform regulation of cryptocurrencies among G20 countries could potentially delay regulation in individual countries, including India. Being an intergovernmental advisor on blockchain and cryptocurrency matters, I would propose that the Indian government do the same, rather than have uniform regulations across the entire country; they should be LocalizedThis approach can have several advantages, such as allowing for a more flexible and agile regulatory framework that can respond quickly to market changes and industry needs. LoLocalizedegulations can also take into account the specific needs and circumstances of different regions and jurisdictions and allow for the development of regulations tailored to the local context and priorities. This can be especially important in a country as diverse and complex as India, where there may be significant regional variations in the needs and challenges faced by the cryptocurrency industry.

To conclude

Indeed, the recent events in the crypto market have highlighted the need for some form of regulation in the crypto market. These events have demonstrated the potential risks associated with cryptocurrencies, including the volatility of prices, the lack of investor protection, and the potential for illegal activities.

The Indian Presidency provides an opportunity for India to showcase its leadership and to promote its views and interests on these and other issues of global significance. The timeline for introducing the regulations has not been officially announced yet. It is expected that the regulations will be presented in the near future following the G20 conference this month.

I hope something concrete and reasonable on cryptocurrency will come out of this meeting. Fingers-crossed.
