Can Crypto Bypass Sanctions? Russia Thinks So

Can Crypto Bypass Sanctions? Russia Thinks So

By now, we are all familiar with the versatile use of cryptocurrencies. From enabling fast and borderless transactions to serving as an investment vehicle, digital currencies have demonstrated their capacity to disrupt traditional financial systems.

On July 30, 2024, Russian lawmakers passed a bill that will allow local businesses to use cryptocurrencies in international trade deals in an effort to side-pass Western sanctions.

Russia is not the first country to turn to cryptocurrencies in an attempt to side-pass imposed sanctions with North Korea also reportedly using digital currencies for the same reason.

How significant is Russia’s latest move to the crypto community? And can crypto truly be used to circumvent sanctions? We turn to the experts.

Key Takeaways

  • Russia passed a new bill that allows businesses to use cryptocurrencies in international trade, aiming to bypass Western sanctions.
  • The Russian ruble/USDT pair may see significant movement as demand from importers grows, indicating a potential increase in cryptocurrency transactions and market activity within Russia.
  • Despite the new bill, Russia’s crypto regulations remain complex, requiring businesses to navigate stringent AML and KYC laws to avoid legal issues and ensure compliance.
  • This new crypto strategy could strengthen ties with countries like Iran and China.
  • This legislation represents a step toward mass crypto adoption in Russia, potentially transforming how international trade is conducted and encouraging broader use of digital currencies.

Russia to Allows Businesses to Use Crypto in Deals

Russia’s State Duma passed a first-of-its-kind bill on 30 July 2024 stating that the country would allow businesses to use cryptocurrencies to secure international deals.

According to Russia’s central bank head, Elvira Nabiullina, who spoke at the Federation Council’s Financial Market Development Board meeting, the scheme is set to start under “an experimental regime” and will be pioneered before the end of the year.

Anton Gorelkin, a member of the State Duma and the co-author of the bill, added:

“We consider cryptocurrencies to be a tool which we can use to bypass sanctions as well as a point of high-tech export. Today, Russia ranks second highest in mining [crypto], and I am confident that once regulation in this area is established, we will surpass the United States, taking first place.”

According to industry experts, Russia’s bill is considered a “strategic move” to sidestep Western sanctions, as the country itself has stated — “but it also represents a significant shift in Russia’s global trade strategy amid increasing financial isolation,” Anndy Lian, an inter-governmental blockchain advisor, told Techopedia.

Lian added that the country’s current move is particularly noteworthy, seeing as Russia has previously had a pretty powerful anti-crypto stance, thus “indicating a programmatic shift in response to economic pressures”.

Financial Agents as a New Emerging Group

Dmitry Mishunin, the CEO of HashEx Blockchain Security, told Techopedia that Russia is most likely not evading sanctions through the use of cryptocurrency but giving way to a new group of financial agents — middlemen who perform transactions for importer companies.

“The scheme is simple: the importer pays the agent in rubles, and the agent pays in other currencies to the exporter.

“And this can be certified as a transaction between the supplier and the buyer without mentioning the agent.

“No one can say for sure how specifically these agents work. Some transfer their money through friendlier countries, some indeed use cryptocurrency.

“However, more often than not agents are smaller companies that belong to large financial institutions.”

Mishunin added that such agents often charge 15% for their services, however, the legislative basis for crypto payments within the country could open up the market for smaller-level agents who could lower the price for their services to 10% — a positive step for the country’s economy.

Lian further explained that while cryptocurrencies do provide a theoretical means to bypass sanctions, the practical implementation remains “complex and fraught with risks”.

“Cryptocurrencies offer a degree of anonymity and can facilitate cross-border transactions without relying on traditional financial systems, which are often subject to sanctions.

“However, the transparency of blockchain technology means that transactions can be traced, and major exchanges typically comply with international regulations, including sanctions.

“Regulatory scrutiny is increasing, and many countries are implementing stricter controls on cryptocurrency transactions to prevent their use in illegal activities … Therefore, while possible, using cryptocurrencies to evade sanctions is not a foolproof or widely adopted strategy.”

RUB/USDT Pair Could See Growth

Meanwhile, while some investors may avoid stablecoins, industry experts are noting that the RUB/USDT pair could see much movement in a deal like this.

“The other side of this coin is satisfying the demand for crypto assets. We might actually witness a deficit in the RUB/USDT pair, in case the demand from importers starts growing.

“It is one thing to provide your services to tourists and some professionals, new market demands are an entirely different thing,” HashEx’s Mishunin explained.

CEO of bitsCrunch, the AI-enabled decentralized, blockchain data network, Vijay Pravin, further highlighted the role popular stablecoins such as USDC and USDT could play in this deal due to their price stability and widespread acceptance.

“Cryptocurrencies with robust privacy features could be appealing options due to their transaction anonymity.”

Regulatory Environment Continues to Remain Complex

Despite the recent bill, Russia’s recent legalization of crypto mining, which is set to take action from November 2024, as well as continued efforts to pilot the digital ruble, crypto regulations in Russia continue to remain complex.

Lian explained:

“Compliance with Russian regulations is essential to avoid legal repercussions. Internationally, businesses must navigate the varying legal frameworks of different countries, many of which have stringent regulations on cryptocurrency transactions to prevent money laundering and other illicit activities.

“Additionally, major cryptocurrency exchanges often comply with international sanctions, limiting the ability of sanctioned entities to use their platforms.”

BitsCrunch’s Pravin added that Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Know Your Customer (KYC) regulations are also something Russian businesses interested in conducting business via the use of cryptocurrencies should keep in mind.

“Additionally, navigating sanctions enforcement by other countries and managing cross-border legal discrepancies will be crucial to avoid further legal complications.”

Either way, however, experts agree that the introduction of such a bill is a means to strengthen ties with Russia’s friendlier nations and those that are also looking to bypass Western sanctions such as Iran and China.

“On one hand, it might strengthen ties with countries that are also looking to bypass Western sanctions, such as Iran and China, fostering a bloc of nations using alternative financial systems. On the other hand, it could strain relationships with countries that adhere to international sanctions and regulatory standards,” Lian explained.

Cryptocurrencies Could Offer Sanctioned Countries a Path

Lian added: “Countries like Iran and North Korea have reportedly used cryptocurrencies to evade international sanctions. Iran has explored using Bitcoin for international trade to bypass banking restrictions, leveraging its abundant energy resources for mining. North Korea has been involved in cyber activities to steal cryptocurrencies, which are then laundered to fund its regime.

“These cases show that while cryptocurrencies can offer a way to circumvent traditional financial systems, they come with significant risks and challenges.”

The aftermath of such actions was increased scrutiny from international bodies that, in turn, limited the effectiveness of the countries’ strategies.

For Russia, Lian explains that the situation is similar, but on a larger scale seeing how the country has a more significant economic footprint.

“The use of cryptocurrencies could provide some relief from sanctions, but the associated risks, including regulatory crackdowns and the volatility of crypto markets, make it a complex and uncertain strategy.”

BitsCrunch’s Pravin added that global efforts to enforce international crypto regulations could present more challenges for Russian businesses that are looking to engage in financial trades using crypto.

HashEx’s Mishunin, on the other hand, noted that any movement from the Russian government in the direction of crypto regulation instead of embargoes is a positive thing and could work wonders for the Russian economy.

The Bottom Line

Russia’s new bill to legalize cryptocurrency use in international trade represents a strategic move to bypass Western sanctions and adapt to political pressures. While this move could provide some relief and foster high-tech exports, it introduces complexities and risks, including regulatory scrutiny and potential legal challenges.

The future of crypto adoption in global trade, particularly for countries under sanctions, continues to remain uncertain. Lian concludes that in the long term, the integration of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) could offer a more regulated and widely accepted solution for international trade, even for sanctioned nations.

Why is the Crypto Market Down Today? Time to Buy the Dip?

Why is the Crypto Market Down Today? Time to Buy the Dip?

The first week of August 2024 got off to a miserable start for risk asset investors across the globe.

Major equity markets in the U.S., Europe, Japan, Australia, South Korea, and India were battered on August 5, 2024.

Bitcoin (BTC) mirrored equity market losses to fall below the $50,000 mark for the first time in nearly five months.

Meanwhile, Ethereum (ETH) bore the brunt of the selloff as the premier altcoin fell as much as 21% on the day.

Why is crypto crashing today? As we try and answer that, we will also look forward and analyze whether Bitcoin crashing is an opportunity to buy the dip.

Why is the Crypto Market Down?

The recent crash in cryptocurrency prices can be mainly attributed to macroeconomic factors:

U.S. Fed’s Rate Hike Cycle

Let’s rewind to March 2022, when the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) hiked interest rates for the first time in two years to quell inflation in the country. The March 2022 hike marked the start of a global monetary tightening cycle that saw central banks across the world raise borrowing rates to keep up with the Fed.

The Fed was very aggressive in its fight against inflation, raising interest rates from 0.25% in March 2022 to 5.5% by July 2023.

The last time the Fed undertook such a strong measure — raising rates from 1% in June 2004 to 5.25% in June 2006 — it was preceded by the Great Recession of 2007-2008.

Investors now fear that history could repeat itself, having seen unemployment rates in the U.S. rise consistently over the past year. A contraction of U.S. factory activity for four straight months between April 2024 to July 2024 has also reinforced recession fears.

“Historically, the likelihood of a recession in 2025 is high, and the stock market typically anticipates such downturns well in advance,” said  Markus Theilen of 10x Research in a note.

The crypto crash today may also make sense when we understand that the institutionalization of cryptocurrencies has made the digital asset market more sensitive to macroeconomic forces than ever before.

Financial institutions, hedge funds and professional investors are selling Bitcoin and altcoins as they prepare for a potential recession.

Anndy Lian, intergovernmental blockchain expert and author of ‘Blockchain Revolution 2030’ told Techopedia:

“Global recession fears can significantly impact cryptocurrency prices, primarily due to investors’ heightened risk aversion. When economic indicators suggest a potential downturn, investors often shift their capital from riskier assets like cryptocurrencies to safer investments such as government bonds or gold.

“This flight to safety can lead to a sell-off in the crypto market, driving prices down.”

Unwinding of Japanese Yen Carry Trade

Many also attributed the fall in the risk asset market that occurred in early August 2024 to the unwinding of the Japanese Yen carry trade.

The Japanese central bank has historically maintained zero-to-negative interest rates in order to boost economic activity and counter deflation in the island nation.

However, in March 2024, the Bank of Japan (BoJ) ended the era of negative interest rates for the first time in 17 years by increasing short-term interest rates to 0-0.1%.

On July 31, 2024, the BoJ raised rates further to 0.25%, making it more expensive to borrow the Japanese yen.

The Yen had been a favourite among investors as a carry trade option, where investors borrow money at a lower interest rate to invest the borrowed sum in assets that can provide higher returns.

“The BoJ’s rate hike last week (on July 31, 2024), which played a key role in the subsequent market meltdown, showed that you can’t unwind the biggest carry trade of the century without breaking a few heads,” said Presto Research in an email newsletter.

Should I Buy the Dip?

With BTC trading over 26% below its all-time high price ($73,750 in March 2024) and ETH trading at six-month lows, investors may be thinking of buying the crypto dip.

We asked Techopedia’s panel of crypto experts for their thoughts on the subject.

Shiven Moodley, chief operating officer and macro strategist at brokerage firm 80eight Group, said:

“As a trader, I am buying the dip. Support levels of around $42,000 and $38,000 (for BTC) support accumulation in my thesis that the price will move back above $75,000 towards the end of the year.

“There is positive long-term anticipation for price action ahead of the election in the U.S.”

Meanwhile, Sergei Chmel, managing partner of alternative investment firm SeQuant Capital quoted legendary investor Warren Buffet and said:

“Be brave when others are fearful, and be fearful while others are brave.

He added: “DCA [dollar cost averaging] is the best strategy for a long-term horizon. Trading is a path to poverty.”

Interestingly, Buffett’s company, Berkshire Hathaway, seems to have followed his advice by selling 390 million Apple shares in the second quarter of 2024, just before Apple shares hit an all-time high in mid-July 2024. Berkshire Hathaway held a cash stake of over $276 billion as of June 30, 2024

Elsewhere, 10x Research warned that long-term investment strategies like HODLing and DCA in BTC and ETH have not been favorable since 2021.

“Bitcoin is primarily a momentum trading game where the trend is your friend—until it isn’t. While we can outline potential cycle developments, trading the peaks and troughs requires reacting to breakdown or breakout signals.

“This approach might result in losses when false buy signals occur during rallies, but effective risk management, such as using stop-loss orders, can protect most traders’ capital.”

BTC Hedge Criticism

Crypto’s crash alongside global equity markets in early August 2024 invited criticism from a section of the crowd who questioned the popular crypto narrative that Bitcoin is a hedge against global economies and a good asset for diversification.

Joe Weisenthal, editor at Bloomberg, said Bitcoin – often dubbed “digital gold” – was looking “a lot more like Nvidia than it does gold.”

Elsewhere, Beat Nussbaumer, founder of MacroBeat, wrote:

“BTC dropped some 10% to 52.3K….that much for a store of value…. at some point, people will finally see it for what it is… just another risky asset.”

Michael Nadeau of the DeFi Report newsletter explained crypto’s correlated crash with the global equity market, saying:

While crypto is generally uncorrelated to traditional markets, correlations quickly move to 1 during macro/liquidity events. All assets are correlated during these times, with crypto being much more volatile (why you never play with leverage).”

Outlook for Crypto Market

Macroeconomics will continue to be a key driver of risk asset markets over the near term as the U.S. Fed prepares to embark on a rate cut cycle that is expected to start in September 2024.

While rate cuts are typically seen as bullish events for risk asset markets, the underlying conditions — slow hiring, rising unemployment, and contracting manufacturing activity — have compelled investors to take a cautious stance.

“As noted earlier this week, if the Federal Reserve cuts rates after a prolonged hiking cycle solely due to weaker inflation, stocks (and Bitcoin) should interpret the first cut as bullish.

“However, if a weak economy drives the cut — as was the case in 2001 and 2007 — stocks (and Bitcoin) are likely to decline,” said 10x Research.

Looking forward, we asked Techopedia’s expert panels for their outlook on the crypto market.

Moodley said:

“BTC has some consolidation support levels of around $42k and $ 38k, which would interest many whales. While ETH has breached a two-standard deviation move, any more volatility could see us break the $2000 key support level toward $1800”

Sergei said:

“Regarding Bitcoin and its role as a hedge, one thing every investor should understand and remember about Bitcoin is that it is a perfect hedge in a medium-and-long term time horizon, but because it’s one of the most liquid assets in the world, in moments of panic investors rush to sell what they can.”

The Bottom Line

As this article goes to press, the crypto market has bounced back from the Monday market crash. Investors are buying the dip as we speak with BTC rising over 10% and ETH jumping over 14% on August 6, 2024 in early Asia trade.

If you are thinking of investing in risk asset markets, remember to always do your own due diligence before investing. Market analysts and experts can be wrong, and the future cannot be predicted. This article should not be taken as financial advice and is for informational purposes only.

Crypto Liquidations Top $1 Billion After Bitcoin Dives Below $50K

Crypto Liquidations Top $1 Billion After Bitcoin Dives Below $50K

The cryptocurrency market experienced a seismic shock in the past 24 hours, with total liquidations surpassing $1.06 billion and affecting 278,480 traders.

This market meltdown, characterized by a stark imbalance between long and short positions, saw long liquidations reaching a staggering $902 million, while short liquidations stood at $160 million, according to CoinGlass data.

The single largest liquidation in the past day has been a $27 million position on Huobi, according to Coinglass.

Bitcoin (BTC), the flagship cryptocurrency, plummeted to a low of $49,647 during early European trading hours before slightly recovering to $52,900, still down 12.5% compared to this time yesterday.

Ethereum (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency, faced an even steeper decline, dropping 19.5% to $2,345 after touching a low of $2,111, according to TradingView data.

The carnage wasn’t limited to the top two cryptocurrencies.

The broader altcoin market experienced significant losses, with Solana (SOL) and BNB (BNB) down 13% and 16% respectively, Dogecoin (DOGE) plunging 18%, and XRP falling 15%.

Global Economic Factors at Play

Anndy Lian, an intergovernmental blockchain expert, attributes this downturn to the increasing interconnectedness between traditional financial markets and cryptocurrencies.

“There is a growing connection between traditional financial markets and cryptocurrency markets, meaning that disruptions in one can lead to instability in the other,” Lian told Decrypt.

He pointed to recent developments in the U.S. economy as a primary catalyst.

“The unemployment rate increased to 4.3% from the previous 4.1%. This unexpected rise has heightened fears of a potential recession, causing investors to worry that the Federal Reserve may be slow to respond with interest rate cuts,” Lian stated.

The ripple effects were felt across various sectors.

The MSCI US Index, a market-capitalization weighted index that tracks large- and mid-cap segments of the U.S. equities market, dropped by 1.8% last Friday, with the consumer discretionary sector performing particularly poorly, falling by 4.3%. This weakness underscores growing concerns about consumer spending and economic growth.

Bleak Outlook for Bitcoin

10x Research provided a grim forecast for the crypto market.

“Although Bitcoin has been in a gradual downtrend, marked by three tops and two bottoms, we anticipate the support line at $55,000 will break, potentially driving prices down to $42,000. In such a scenario, Ethereum could drop below $2,000,” they stated.

The research firm cited economic weakness, ongoing weak market structure, on-chain data, and cycle analysis as factors supporting their bearish outlook.

Meanwhile, Tristan Dickinson, CMO of Bitcoin scaling solution exSat Network, highlighted the impact of global events on the crypto market.

“Bitcoin isn’t immune to global macro events. The 12% plunge in the Nikkei, coupled with dismal performances from the Dow Jones, S&P 500, and Nasdaq, is fuelling global recession fears,” Dickinson told Decrypt.

He also pointed to the “very real threat of global conflict” as an additional factor unsettling investors.

Dickinson added a note of caution regarding the coming months: “August and September are historically weak months, suggesting potential sideways movement and further tests of Bitcoin’s support levels.”
