Interview with Anndy Lian: Role of DAO and its Future

Interview with Anndy Lian: Role of DAO and its Future

– An Ukrainian DAO raised about 8 million dollar for the war effort? How do you see the role of DAO in international financing for economically ravaged/weaker countries?

There’s certainly potential in quickly and securely using DAOs (decentralized autonomous organizations) for financing for troubled parts of the world. The case of the Ukraine DAO shows that such a decentralized structure can be spun up quickly and cheaply and engage with a community around issues of concern to individuals around the world. You can also see from the growing use of crypto donations in the NGO and charity sector that DAOS could become a more formal means to channel funds and with less cost in terms of money transfer fees, and with less issues with government bureaucracy by directing funds straight into the pockets of those most in need. In addition, as a collectively owned and managed entity with a set of rules written in computer code, the DAO offers the potential couple with good governance, to avoid corruption that can damage already economically weakened countries.

– Russia has now been imposed multiple economic sanctions. How will DAO in particular play a role in Russian economy now that it will largely be cut off from the international financial system?

It may well be that civil society groups and civilian organizations faced with the impact of economic sanctions will use DAOs to bypass central government restrictions and appeal directly to people across the world for financial help. That will pose problems for the DAO as a model for co-operation as it raises pertinent questions about governance, how do you prove governance and how do you resist your funds being secured by state organizations. However, with the likely collapse of the Russian economy cryptocurrency gives ordinary Russians the opportunity to safeguard funds, as well as to use DAOs to pool resources to meet the needs for housing and heating to name two essential requirements for societal infrastructure to sustain the fabric of civil society in the face of the possible collapse of central government.

– Do you the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war as an inflection point in the mass adoption of DAO system? and how?

In fact, the rise of the DAO is closely tied to the emergence of cryptocurrency with the launch of Bitcoin back in 2008. It set the template, where typically the DAO founder has no workplace and no employees, but the project continues to run quietly because a group of people who believe in the project contribute to it.

More than a decade later, this DAO-based project has a market value of $1.3 trillion, making it one of the world’s top five company in terms of market value. Yes, Bitcoin is the most successful DAO right now, and its founder is the anonymous Satoshi Nakamoto. There is no boss or employees to manipulate, and all such organizations operate autonomously and anonymously. This is DAO’s core value.

More recently, the trend in using DAOs specifically to raise money for campaigns with a political theme have also emerged, in the lead up to the war in Ukraine. Notably ConstitutionDAO was founded on November 11, 2021, by a group of cryptocurrency enthusiasts. Its creators hoped to raise funds through the DAO method in order to purchase a copy of the US Constitution to realize the great dream of “putting the Constitution in the hands of the people,” and attracting over 17,000 donors. ConstitutionDAO took just nine days to raise approximately 11,000 ETH, which is worth more than $47 million.

While in December 2021 a DAO created to raise money for Ross Ulbricht, the jailed founder of Silk Road, announced that over 1,320 people raised over 2,800 ETH in to win the auction for Ross’s NFT. In short, the main reasons for FreeRossDAO’s popularity are its association with NFTs and people’s sympathy for the unfair treatment of Ross.

Taken in this context the mass adoption of DAOs to raise money to support the Ukrainian people is part of a growing trend, highlighted by the urgent need for resources to help refugees and civilian organizations. Indeed, the inspiration for the Ukraine DAO, the leading DAO which has raised over $13 million in crypto donations to date, came from a UK-based Ukrainian activist Alona Shevchenko who works with FreeRossDAO. Connecting to her network of friends led to the connection to Nadya Tolokonnikova of Pussy Riot, who launched the DAO on February 25 along with Trippy Labs and members of PleasrDAO, which was behind FreeRossDAO.

Therefore, the launch of the Ukraine DAO is in many ways simply a recognition of the already growing use of DAOs to raise funds for specific causes; the Russian invasion was the catalyst but whether it is a ‘tipping point’ remains to be seen. Some of the previous issues such as concerns about crypto scammers using the situation to fraudulently raise funds have emerged concerning published crypto addresses when queried by Ethereum’s founder Vitalik Butelin. Which is why the use of the DAO mechanism, which provides greater transparency has proved so popular as well as the means to organize collectively around it. As stated on the Ukraine DAO website, similar to a direct P2P crypto donation method using a DAO coupled with crypto as the funding mechanism means that: “Decentralized Autonomous Organizations are a model for the world to witness how people with a common purpose can join and work together quickly to distribute funds to present humanitarian causes.”

The speed and global reach of the Ukraine DAO, bypassing the problems caused by using conventional funding means whether through central funding institutions such as the banks or examples such as the Patreon startup, which returned money raised for the Ukrainian army, certainly shows their power for future fundraising in Ukraine. Whether this will mean that DAOs will work as a broader model for organizational structure is another question. DAOS have also caught the imagination of the startup community in the US for example, with VC money following suit. That entrepreneurial interest includes celebrity crypto owner Mark Cuban, who added a note of caution in highlighting the importance of good governance to provide long-term benefit to DAO members. “The future of corporations could be very different as DAOs take on legacy businesses,” he is quoted as saying. “Entrepreneurs that enable DAOs can make money. If the community excels at governance, everyone shares in the upside.”

– DAO, largely speaking, is legally still undefined. In the sense, there is a lot of gray area when it comes to DAO. Do you see DAO as a tool to channel the wealth of people who have been sanctioned?

It’s correct to say that DAOs can be used by any group of people with a collective purpose in mind, harnessing the power of cryptocurrency and guided by a set of principles embedded into the smart contracts that regulate the DAO’s operations. However, as recently outlined by the industry organisation CryptoUK, the converse is that by the nature of crypto its very possible to track any illegal funds coming out of Russia. For example, that are a lot of coin swap pools that are trackable, which can be monitored. So, when it comes to trying to evade sanctions it shows that the crypto industry has the capability to react and mobilize in real time to freeze or block funds and also to trace transactions to a single wallet where required. “Crypto transactions are not anonymous and untraceable. Through Public / Private sector collaboration we can quickly inform the criminal world (or those looking to circumvent sanctions) that this technology is exactly the opposite of what they are looking for in terms of anonymity and lack of traceability,” confirmed CryptoUK.

– How can DAO become more legally secured across the world, in order to make sure it is not misused by non-state actors?

While DAOs offer an alternative to organizing a corporation with decision making baked into the code, funding via the Dao’s token, and decisions decided by the whole community, in practice they currently lack the legal status of a corporate entity and a consistent regulatory framework. The token itself depending on the country’s regulations may be deemed as a security and come under tight legal regulations of its own, potentially opening up members of a DAO to liability. At least in the US as unincorporated entities, DAOs do not need to follow the legal formalities of incorporation such as registration, bylaws, and contracts. As a result, DAOs are treated as unincorporated partnerships. In a partnership, each individual has unlimited liability. Therefore, if the DAO is hacked or declares bankruptcy, each member is exposed to liability for the entire amount of funds. This key aspect of the legal status of DAOs for fund raising would need to be resolved to ensure they are not misused by non-state actors. It maybe that a lead would need to be taken at an international level, such as through the United Nations, as well as by individual nation states if the DAO is to prove sustainable from a regulatory standpoint, therefore.

OVR coin price prediction: Does AR have a future

OVR coin price prediction: Does AR have a future

Augmented and virtual reality metaverse platform OVR started December 2021 with a blast.

However, amid broad negative market sentiment due to an escalation of geopolitical tensions between Russia and Ukraine, its native token, OVR, saw a 50.52% decline since its all time high of $3.3213 on 2 December to $1.6431 at the time of writing (25 February 2022).

Following recent news that the platform decided to move to the Polygon network from Ethereum in an attempt to tackle scalability, what is the outlook for the OVR coin price prediction for 2022, 2025 and 2030?

What is OVR coin?

OVR is a decentralised augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) metaverse project which merges the physical and virtual worlds.

AR allows users to add different types of content to their surroundings, including audio, video two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) animation.

The metaverse can be accessed via a mobile device or smart glasses, through which users will be able to experience interactive augmented reality experiences.

According to the platform’s whitepaper, OVR aims to become the reference decentralised platform for AR content.

The metaverse is built on the Ethereum network and is powered by the OVR token, an ERC-20-based cryptocurrency.

The platform is made up of the OVR ecosystem, a digital layer that covers the entirety of the Earth’s surface with 1.6t hexagons. Each of these hexagons is known as an OVRLand and have specific geographical position points on the Earth’s surface and a standard 300 square metre dimension.

OVRLands can be further divided into seven hexagons, allowing players to have more precise localisation.

They act as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and can be sold, auctioned and rented via the platform’s native marketplace.

The game starts when users purchase an OVRLand and become an OVROwner.

OVROwners can adjust and enhance their lands with a number of AR experiences known as OVRExperiences which can also be purchased through the OVR marketplace. The experiences are related to specific geographic locations and, according to the game’s developers, everything is possible when creating them from static 3D content.

Users can also create personalised avatars and join a number of live events, where they can meet fellow metaverse players and make friends or enter relationships.

The OVR token acts as an exchange medium within the entirety of the OVR ecosystem and can be used in the following ways:

  • Purchase OVRLand and other products on the OVR marketplace
  • Create OVRExperiences
  • Pay OVRCreators to build OVRExperience for users
  • Pay for the rent of virtual space
  • Grant users governance that can exercise voting rights on key features within the project’s roadmap

OVR tokens can be earned by selling or renting OVRLand, staking, building and publishing AR experiences. In addition, the platform implemented a decentralised advertising system based on a publisher/advertiser principle where users can earn coins by adding sponsored content on the owned lands.

The token did not have an initial coin offering (ICO). Instead, it introduced an initial bonding curve offering (IBCO), which determined the coin’s price via demand following its bonding curve. If the coin was in demand, its price would grow and more tokens would be minted.

The total supply of OVR tokens stands at 110m, with 27.9m in circulation. The coin’s market capitalization surpassed $46m. OVR was ranked 2973 by CoinMarketCap as of the time of writing (25 February 2022).

As of 25 February 2022, the platform had sold 90,766 OVRLands. All OVRLands are sold via auctions, which extend for 24 hours. The minimum value for a land is $10. OVRLand sales will run until all hexagons are minted.

OVR coin news and analysis: Key drivers

The OVR token had quite the journey before it managed to hit its all-time high of $3.3213 on 2 December 2021 – a 4,555.59% surge since its launch on 31 December 2020 at $0.07134.

The coin’s price started to grow in February 2021, when the metaverse published its development milestones for the month on 1 February. Ten days later it released an updated version of its minting function, known as Light Minting 2.0, which used the Merkle tree storage on the Ethereum blockchain and brought minting fees to 0.

The token surpassed the $1 value for the first time on 8 March 2021, the day the platform released its OVR SDK Alpha version, a function that started to allow users to build experiences on their OVRLand.

The token surged by 169.45% to $2.8562 on 24 March from $1.06 on 8 March.

The OVR token fell to $2.1801 four days later. It regained momentum, surging by 29.77% to $2.8292 two days later as the platform announced the launch of Rollups, a key scalability solution for Ethereum.

The coin’s success was not long-lived. The price started to dramatically drop between March and June, OVR tokens losing 73.47% of their value to $0.7504 on 21 June, despite the platform launching the second version of its Treasure Hunt, a function that allowed users to search for treasures in a manner similar to the Pokémon Go game.

The token’s price continued to move sideways for the next few months. It began to rise once again at the end of October.

At the start of November, the platform introduced OVRLand Mapping, which led to a 70.46% surge from $1.4694 on 31 October to $2.5048 on 7 November.

The introduction of payments via the Binance Smart Chain (BSC) on 18 November saw the token rise by 45.81% to $2.6215 on 25 November after dropping to $1.7978 one day earlier.

The token reached its all time high of $3.3213 on 2 December as the metaverse announced further updates, including the introduction of BSC Swapper and the launch of their updated website.

Despite that, the OVR token started to rapidly decline falling to $2.417 by the end of December and failing to gain momentum since.

What’s next for the OVR token?

Amid wider negative market sentiment, the OVR token price declined by 50.52% to $1.6431, as of the time of writing (25 February 2022) since its all time high in December.

Major OVR coin news followed on 28 January, when the platform announced that it would be moving to the Polygon network from Ethereum in an attempt to tackle scalability.

OVR announced that it was the biggest gas burner  on the Polygon network, having minted over 776,500 OVRLand NFTs between 17th and 23rd February to over 26,800 owners.

Moreover, the metaverse announced on 23 February that ownership of OVR platform assets becoming fully decentralised and independent from the OVR company, however, all the positive news failed to hike the coin’s price.

The platform is planning many more upgrades in the first and second quarters of 2022, including the decentralisation of its OVRLand secondary market, avatar AI integration and the launch of a new marketplace.

The OVR token could be affected by a recent rise in investor uncertainty amid geopolitical tensions and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

OVR price prediction 2022-2030:

Algorithm-based forecasting service Wallet Investor gave a bullish OVR crypto price prediction at the time of writing (25 February), calling it an “awesome long-term investment”.

Based on its analysis of the cryptocurrency’s past performance, the forecasting service predicted that OVR could trade at $3.228 in 2023 and reach $9.242 by 2027.

DigitalCoinPrice supported the bullish OVR token forecast, seeing the coin reach $2.34 by the end of 2022 and $3.07 by December 2025.

The site predicted that the OVR token could reach $6.15 by the end of 2028 and rise to $7.51 by the end of 2030.

BigOne Exchange Chair Anndy Lian supported a bullish OVR price prediction.

“OVR is surely growing. Their ability to map the metaverses with precision is important,” he told Capital.com.

“And now that they have migrated from Ethereum to Polygon network, it will greatly decrease transactional and mining costs, while increasing its scalability for metaverses. I believe the roadmap we see now for OVR is just a small portion of it. I hope to see new developments from them soon.”

Please note that price and analyst predictions can be wrong. Forecasts shouldn’t be used as a substitute for your own research. Always conduct your own due diligence before investing. And never invest or trade money you cannot afford to lose.

GameFi Is Driving the Future of the Metaverse: Here’s Why

GameFi Is Driving the Future of the Metaverse: Here’s Why

The gaming industry is worth billions of dollars, predicted to generate $179.7 billion in 2020, with by comparison the global film industry reaching $100 billion in revenue for the first time in 2019.

According to Statista, over 2.7 billion people in the world actively or passively play video games, with China ranked first as the biggest gaming market just ahead of the US. In this dynamic market, the latest innovation, a crossover genre between crypto and gaming is a new breed of play-to-earn games or GameFi. GameFi is a concept that provides monetary incentives to gamers through a play-to-earn model, as opposed to the traditional “play-to-win” model that has been popular in the gaming industry.

How is the metaverse taking shape?

The Metaverse concept has also recently gained popularity, thanks in part to incorporating blockchain technology into GameFi, but also clearly driven by the growth of the gaming market. Not surprisingly tech titans dominated by gaming including Microsoft, Samsung, and Sony are joining forces to form the XR Association, which is aimed at bringing this concept of an ‘experiential reality to life.

Not to be outdone at the end of June Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg made a big bold play, basically laying out the future for Facebook in the metaverse, before changing the company’s name to Meta, reflecting the company’s growing ambitions beyond social media. Zuckerberg declared that “the metaverse will not be created by one company. It will be built by creators and developers making new experiences and digital items that are interoperable and unlock a massively larger creative economy.” Microsoft, worth $2.5 trillion, and $731 billion Nvidia, quickly followed suit with their own metaverse visions, reported Forbes.

Of course, anyone who’s seen the movie The Social Network, or has seen recent evidence on how Facebook can do harm through manipulating its online users’ behavior, is certainly going to wonder if the metaverse is going to be safe with a giant like Facebook. As Tim Sweeney, the CEO of leading gaming company Epic, which has raised $1 billion to support their long-term vision of the metaverse, remarked:

“This Metaverse is going to be far more pervasive and powerful than anything else. If one central company gains control of this, they will become more powerful than any government, and be a god on Earth.” And as UK-based blockchain startup Outlier Ventures pointed out, the need to have a crypto decentralized core is therefore paramount: “The defining characteristic of a true Metaverse is that it needs its own economy and currencies native to it, where value can be earnt, spent, lent, borrowed or invested interchangeably in both a physical or virtual sense and most importantly without the need for a government.”

According to metaverse proponents, the success of GameFi coupled with the growth of NFTs may provide the solution required to make a more inter-operable metaverse which is free from domination by the likes of Facebook a reality. It’s also worth noting that China has itself started to take the metaverse seriously, presenting China with

“great opportunities and revolutionary effects,”

Zuo Pengfei, a researcher at the state-affiliated Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, argued in a September article. It’s interesting that more recently Zuo, agreed that the metaverse has “an inherent monopoly gene,” and that care must be taken to “avoid the metaverse being monopolized by a few forces”, according to a report in Quartz.

What’s also worth considering is that both Facebook, with its Novi wallet and cryptocurrency in the shape of Diem, and the Chinese central bank the PBOC, with its digital yuan, both have the DeFi capacity to monetize gaming in the metaverse to the tune of billions of dollars. So, any more decentralized version of the metaverse, reliant on using cryptocurrencies to power the virtual economy, needs to be aware of that reality from the get-go.

GameFi: Disrupting the online gaming industry

The play-to-earn model has shaken the online gaming industry, with traditional players looking to switch to GameFi projects like Axie Infinity. Cryptocurrencies have already been successfully integrated recently into virtual worlds created by companies such as Decentraland and Sandbox. For example, users in Decentraland can purchase virtual real estate such as theme parks and monetize them using cryptocurrencies.

BigONE believes that the rise in popularity of GameFi projects such as Axie Infinity played a significant role in GameFi’s mainstreaming. GameFi has been in the works since 2017, with the introduction of CryptoKitties. Still, it did not go mainstream until this year, with the popular game Axie Infinity reaching a market cap of over $1 billion in 2021. Before “play-to-earn,” gaming assets and tokens could not be used outside the gaming environment and had no real-world value. With GameFi, in-game purchases can now have real value and have applications outside of the gaming environment.

A key factor contributing to the disruptive power of GameFi is that it is built upon blockchain technology rather than traditional gaming apps built using Java and Unity frameworks. Plus, from a technical perspective, GameFi is generally easier to implement and develop. Such is the threat from GameFi that traditional gaming publishers such as Ubisoft and Epic Games have suggested that GameFi is the future of their blockchain-based games strategy.

BigONE believes that this is yet another indicator of GameFi’s meteoric rise and why it is the future of gaming. According to reports from the Philippines, Axie Infinity, the largest GameFi project, is a huge source of income for the people of the Philippines, paying some of the citizens more than the country’s average salary. In addition, reputable investment firms are beginning to invest more in GameFi initiatives, with Solana Ventures, FTX, and Lightspeed announcing a $100 million GameFi fund recently.

GameFi and the future of the metaverse

What’s clear is that whoever wins the battle to control the metaverse will need to use some kind of digital currency to power the virtual economy. The more monopolistic the approach the more likely this will result in something like a Novi, a dollar-based stablecoin as the de facto default currency.

Despite Zuckerberg’s awareness that by its nature the metaverse is inter-operable, rather than a ‘walled garden’, the amount of money and effort put into this virtual space shows that first-mover advantage will make a difference in the web3 world just as much as the current web 2.0 digital economy, where the likes of Amazon and Google reign supreme.

It’s up to the leading GameFi companies like Axie Infinity to show that the more choices there are for users to earn money from gaming or creating, the stronger the metaverse will be for all participants.

A more decentralized vision of the metaverse inspired by the likes of GameFi startups such as Axie Infinity would support the kind of metaverse that gamers, DeFi traders would welcome.

“While there is room for many different visions of the metaverse I believe GameFi is showing the way, with a decentralized model for gaming and earning money based on trading tokens and NFTs. This is the metaverse where people have greater choice and opportunity, to come together to form their own communities and economies.”
