Cryptos crumble but VCs remain gung-ho on future prospects

Cryptos crumble but VCs remain gung-ho on future prospects

Venture capitalists (VCs) have poured billions into crypto and blockchain startups this year, especially into the Web3 and Ethereum layer-2 scaling solutions space, despite apparent overall bearish sentiments.

According to a report compiled by financial services and investment management firm Galaxy Digital, Venture Capitalists (VCs) have invested over $10 billion in crypto startups in the first quarter of this year.

Just earlier this week, VC giant Andreessen Horowitz announced the close of a $4.5bn crypto fund that focuses on Web3 startups.

Also, a group of former executives from Binance, one of the largest global cryptocurrency exchanges, announced a $100-million venture fund called Old Fashion Research earlier this week, to bring greater crypto adoption to growing markets like Latin America and Africa.

Singapore-based VC firm NGC Ventures also launched a $100-million fund dedicated to high potential Web3 projects and metaverse economies.

According to experts, blockchain and not crypto, is the underlying reason for these investments, with crypto being one of the use cases of the blockchain. The possibilities of new use cases, Web 3.0, and accelerated adoption of blockchain technology – all add to the uptick in investments with scale, growth, and returns all on the horizon.

Roderik van der Graaf, Founder of Lemniscap, says the high degree of market volatility that crypto markets are currently experiencing can elicit fear among some investor categories and undercut overall ecosystem sentiment in the short run. However, VCs generally view the market landscape with a wider aperture and execute a consistent, measured approach to building their portfolios. Usually, a foundational market thesis guides their investment rationale.

van der Graaf, the founder of the investment firm specializing in crypto and blockchain technology, added that market downturns do not undermine this thesis in the short term, and in fact, can actually serve as a long-term cleansing force, recalibrating the market equation with fundamentals rather than unfounded collective psychology.

Some of the best projects will emerge during these testing times, and Lemniscap will continue to back high-potential startups as they evolve into high-performance protocols and platforms, said van der Graaf.

Jenny Zheng, Business Development Lead for Bybit NFT Marketplace and co-founder of Blockcast Ventures, said VCs invest more during a down market and grow them in the bull market because in an upward market everything is overpriced, especially, in the crypto world.

“When it goes up, it is like 100 times, when it goes down, it could be down by 99 percent, so the entry point is much more important compared to the traditional finance world,” he says.

Zheng further says that in crypto, there are always new things coming out, from ICO IEO IDO INO to Gamefi, Defi, and NFT. “Following the new trends and getting involved at an early stage is the key. VCs are following the trends too. Defi, Gamefi, and NFTs are the top choices and they are here to stay for many years to come,” according to him.

Sam Kim, CEO of Sukuma Ventures and founder of Gochapaa, a crypto wallet based in Kenya, says the main reason for VCs pouring investments into blockchain companies is because of investors’ enthusiasm to search and deploy fresh capital into innovative technologies and frontier markets where the innovation adoption is still at its infant stage.

“Despite the growing concerns in capital markets from the hawkish sentiment of the US Fed and ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the search for growth is never-ending,” Kim says.

Anndy Lian, Chief Digital Advisor to Mongolian Productivity Organisation, says other asset classes are also not doing well and some of them might take a much longer time for recovery. Crypto, on the other hand, has been proven to recover relatively faster.

“Secondly, blockchain and crypto are still the talking points in the tech industry. The future growth is very promising. I see with my own eyes that traditional fintech companies are rebranding themselves into crypto, jumping onto the bandwagon,” he says.

Lian says the number of projects will surely increase given the huge influx of new money with NFTs and Game-fi continuing to be their favorite options.

“We are not only talking about investors putting their money into companies in the big old economies. Investors are heavily pouring into Cambodia and Kenya too for instance. We are seeing good innovation at work in the crypto space,” Lian says.

Raj Kapoor, the chief advisor of crypto advisory firm Acryptoverse, says those enjoying the party are blockchain technology upstarts, trading platforms, Web3, and even the metaverse.

“Founders are now in a position to pick and choose investors because so much capital is looking to invest in these companies. As a result, founders can take advantage of investors that offer more than just money,” Kapoor says.

Jawad Nayyar, co-founder of Pakistani fintech firm PropTech, says over the last five years, NFTs and cryptocurrencies have gone from a Ponzi scheme to a gambling tool and a highly volatile asset to now finally being recognized as a legitimate virtual assets of value.

“In times of monetary expansion, high inflation, and a huge currency devaluation, the private sector now considers cryptos as a hedge against such economic adversaries,” Nayyar says.

As seen in the early stages of Web3, not all experiences make sense or will work with brand longevity, said Michael Gaizutis, founder and CXO of design agency RNO1. However, by taking that next step and investing in great design partners, investors will feel more confident and users will feel more central to the concepts they take part in, he added.

What is Terra Luna 2.0? Everything you need to know about Terra’s fork

What is Terra Luna 2.0? Everything you need to know about Terra’s fork

The Terra Luna community has approved of the revival plan that would see a hard fork from the failed token and the creation of a new blockchain Terra 2.0.

Earlier this month, LUNA crash made headlines, sending shockwaves through the wider cryptocurrency space, with bitcoin (BTC) and ethereum (ETH) crumbling and cryptocurrency trading platform Binance (BNB) forced to suspend trading.

The luna coin is part of a dual-token system along with Terra’s US dollar-pegged stablecoin Terra USD (UST).

Terra USD is an algorithmic stablecoin, which means that its peg to the US dollar is ensured by algorithms and game theory, using a series of smart contracts to keep the price at $1.

When UST unpegged from the USD on 9 May, UST redemptions massively inflated LUNA supply, driving the price down by 99%. The UST crash happened as the algorithms could not keep up, forcing the Luna Foundation Guard and its governance team to sell their bitcoin reserves to save the stablecoin.

This caused BTC to drop to $27,000 and wiped out nearly $400bn of the total cryptocurrency market value.

What is LUNA 2.0?

In a new plan proposed by Kwon, the Terra blockchain would undergo a hard fork, with the launch of Terra 2.0 and the old luna tokens being  renamed into luna classic (LUNC). Kwon’s revival plan has passed with 65.5% majority approval.

The snapshot for Terra 2.0 given by Kwon gives an idea of how the blockchain would work and states that the new Terra will be created without the algorithmic stablecoin.

The Terra Builders Alliance have provided technical details on integration, decentralised applications (dApps) migration, and a guide to rebranding the original Terra chain as ‘Terra Classic’.

The tokens will be renamed as Luna Classic (LUNC), and while the original Cosmos chain will continue to operate, the option to mint or burn coins will be disabled.

The new blockchain is due to arrive on 28 May, according to Terra’s twitter. “The community has been working around the clock to coordinate the new chain’s launch,” the project said.

Terra Station, Terra Finder, the project’s block explorer, and Terra Observer, the project’s feeder for dApps, will all have full functionality when the network goes live, according to Terra’s team.

How will LUNA Classic work?

What is Terra Luna Classic (LUNC)? It’s simply a new token that will replace failed LUNA coins. In the latest LUNA 2.0 news, the new tokens are being airdropped to LUNA and UST holders on 28 May, according to Terra’s Twitter.

There are predetermined groups that are receiving airdrops of the new LUNA coins:

  • Community pool will receive 30% of the token distribution, with 10% earmarked for developers.
  • Pre-crash LUNA holders will receive 35% of the new tokens.
  • Pre-crash UST holders will receive 10% of the new tokens.
  • Post-crash LUNA holders will receive 10% of the new tokens, including staking derivatives – 30% of the tokens will be unlocked at genesis, with the remaining 70% vested over two years, with a six-month cliff.
  • Post-crash UST holders will receive 15% of the tokens – 30% of those are unlocked at genesis, and 70% will be vested over two years, with a six-month cliff.

Terra will airdrop the new LUNC tokens to all LUNA holders with at least 10,000 of luna tokens or less “to ensure that small luna holders have similar initial liquidity profiles”.

The governance will also remove Terraform Labs’ (TFL) wallet from the whitelist for the airdrop, to make Terra a fully community-owned chain. Additionally, a large portion of the token will be allocated to Terra dApp developers to make the ecosystem successful in the long run and provide network security.

Terra LUNA recovery will depend on how its developers and governance team manage to prepare core public infrastructure, wallets, GEN file, execute the launch, provide oversight on essential development programs and act as a steering committee for the new chain.

Meanwhile, Terra ecosystem has millions of users globally, and the Terra Station allows developers from across the world to work together on multiple projects from decentralised finance (DeFi) to fungible labour markets, enabling them to use state-of-the-art infrastructure and gain community experience.

LUNA Classic forecast

“No matter what the price is and how the fork is going to turn out, the more immediate thing to do is to stabilise the projects in their current ecosystem.”

by Anndy Lian, chairman at BigONE Exchange

The future of Terra (LUNA) depends on its successful rebrand and launch. With the Terra community’s strong support to give LUNA a rebirth, the team is on the recovery plan. Popular Terra Classic projects, Astroport, Nebula, Prism, RandomEarth along with several others, will be migrating to the new Terra.

As of 27 May, the LUNA classic price stands at $0.0001313, according to CoinMarketCap’s Terra Classic market page. However, as Terra Chain will be rebranded as Terra Classic the price data would migrate to Terra V2 CMC page.

As the new LUNC coin is at the very early stage, it is extremely difficult to forecast its further direction. As of 27 May, an algorithm-based forecasting service Price Prediction suggested that the new coin to average at $0.00017152 in 2022, rising to an average of $0.00052103 in 2025, and averaging at $0.003 by 2030.

However, these predictions are based on algorithms and do not consider the current scenario. A rebranding attempt to save the crypto and regain the community’s trust will depend on how the launch plays out and if the Terra team can succeed in the airdrop mission as promised.

Anndy Lian, chairman of the Netherlands-registered crypto trading platform BigONE Exchange said that Terra community is remaining strong, yet he’s uncertain for how long.

“They are willing to make changes on their own. Some of them even go to the extent of sending their own wallet to the burn address to help reduce the supply. This is the kind of commitment you see on the ground,” he told Capital.com in a note.

“But such moves by the community are temporary and will not last long given that the core issues are not resolved. They have to clearly state how the funds were being managed, who was and is involved in the whole process.”

Lian believes that in order for Terra 2.0 forking to succeed, the project needs trust and transparency, which would ensure an upbeat outlook and speedy growth.

“Many people out in the market are just concerned about the price. The truth is no matter what the price is and how the fork is going to turn out, the more immediate thing to do is to stabilise the projects in their current ecosystem, let them migrate their dApps and apps to the new blockchain so that they do not have any downtime,” Lian added.

Note that price predictions can be wrong and shouldn’t be used as a substitute to your own research. You should always conduct your own due diligence. Keep in mind that cryptocurrencies are extremely volatile, and never invest or trade money you cannot afford to lose.

BLOCKCHAIN EXPERT SHARES HIS OPTIMISM AMID ONGOING ‘CRYPTO WINTER’

BLOCKCHAIN EXPERT SHARES HIS OPTIMISM AMID ONGOING ‘CRYPTO WINTER’

Anndy Lian is a blockchain executive and author who gave his insights this week regarding the current ‘crypto winter’ marked by the downturn in the virtual asset market.

This Singapore-based chairman of cryptocurrency trading platform BigONE Exchange expressed his upbeat stance despite the market drawdown investors worldwide feel across the board.

We want to share this report with our readers about Mr. Anndy Lian’s hopeful viewpoints despite the present ‘crypto winter.’ We believe we can mitigate their worries, especially if they are adversely affected investors.

Crypto winter is a period when virtual currencies’ trading prices sharply drop, and investors do not see any recovery in sight for more than one year. This time spurs paranoia that the notoriously volatile cryptocurrency industry is about to undergo another prolonged slump.

Additionally, crypto winter indicates a steep decline in virtual coin prices followed by a prolonged flat trading period. The most recent crypto winter took place around 2018.

During that period, Bitcoin rallied to approximately US$20,000 prior to an estimated two-year slide that witnessed it plummet to under US$5,000.

Lian, who wrote the best-selling reference, “Blockchain Revolution 2030,” published by South Korea’s largest bookstore chain, Kyobo, remarked that the Terra crash had doubled down on investors’ fear that the sharp meltdown in the virtual currency market could be longer-lasting and not transitory, much like the US inflation’s steep surge.

This virtual asset collapse drew in confident crypto-asset newcomers, making it quite astonishing. Lian added that the new investors felt enticed partly due to the high level of well-known venture capitalists pouring their investment funds into the cryptocurrency startup and its stablecoin offering.

The Mongolian Productivity Organization’s chief digital advisor mentioned that cryptocurrency commentators were already noting the first signals of crypto winter. These signs are led by Bitcoin’s fall from grace this year.

The flagship cryptocurrency, which trades at exactly US$29,273.97 at the time of writing per the information posted on Coinmarketcap.com, is down from its spectacular US$69,000-high in November 2021 to US$33,000 in January this year.

In Lian’s article posted on blockchain and cryptocurrency news source Forkast News, he remarked that the final nails in the coffin consist of the recession risk following the tapering off of trillions of US dollars injected into the United States’ economy and the US Federal Reserve System getting serious about raising interest rates.

He added the record-busting inflation rates in the world’s largest economy complement the implosion of UST and Terra’s LUNA in dragging down the already ailing crypto-asset market.

Nonetheless, Lian cited that he believes the cryptocurrency and blockchain space would likely become stronger from the present market downturn. He also said that these industries would eventually be more innovative and integrated with mainstream retail and financial ecosystems.

Lian mentioned investing’s fundamental tenets as well. He cited that retail investors should only invest what they can afford to lose, get involved in the cryptocurrency investment scene with a lucid plan, and be careful with crypto-assets’ inherent volatility.

He also said that investors should not invest too much as a component of their overall investment portfolios. We appreciate Mr. Lian’s views about the crypto winter.

We understand that many virtual currency investors feel perturbed these days. However, we hope they will take Mr. Lian’s perspectives and advice.

We are on the same page as this blockchain professional. We also believe the current crypto winter will not last, and better things are ahead for cryptocurrency investors.
